Job Summary

The licensed pharmacy technician may work in various settings including Hospital, Retail, and Ambulatory Infusion Clinics. The technician may also specialize in specific skill sets such as pharmacy buyer/inventory specialist, automation technician, IV room sterile processing technician, IV chemotherapy technician, or medication reconciliation technician. The job duties assigned will be aligned to the technician’s skill set and the pharmacy supervisor or director’s agreed work assignment.

Note:

Technician licensure is required for all settings to allow for floating, cross‑coverage and flexibility in various pharmacy practice settings.

Responsibilities
  • General Pharmacy Technician Duties: Practice within all State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, and FDA rules and regulations. Prepare prescription orders, including sterile and non‑sterile preparations, hazardous and non‑hazardous. Perform unit dose preparation of oral solids and ensure pre‑packaging records are complete. Dispense medications and operate automated dispensing machines (ADM) such as Lynx or Pyxis. Prepare ADM cart fills, stack and restock.

    Run reports from ADMs and enter required documentation. Retrieve narcotics and follow all controlled substance distribution requirements. Manage purchasing and inventory control, assist inventory specialists in maintaining drug inventory levels, process credits/returns to wholesaler, stock and restock, monitor expiration dates, conduct quality assurance checks, maintain a clean workspace, and log temperature controls.
  • IV Room Pharmacy Technician: Compound sterile or non‑sterile pharmaceuticals, including chemotherapy, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and IV admixtures. Ensure compliance with quality assurance requirements: expiration checks, temperature monitoring, hood cleaning documentation, equipment calibration, and environmental sampling. Assist inventory specialists in stocking needed medications and supplies.
  • Inventory Specialist Technician: Perform daily purchasing and inventory control. Review and order stock through wholesalers and vendors. Validate invoices for compliance with contracts and laws. Maintain inventory levels, communicate shortages, coordinate drug recalls and transfer logs, and manage hospital formulary inventory using technology such as Pharmogistics.
  • Automation Technician: Oversee hospital automation equipment, serving as a resource for technology projects, upgrades, and new installations. Assist pharmacists in operational workflows related to ADM, unit dose packagers, and other technologies such as Dose Edge.
  • Ambulatory Infusion Clinic Pharmacy Technician: Oversee daily medication use processes, prepare and deliver sterile and hazardous medications, complex IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and biotherapy admixtures. Plan purchasing and inventory control and collaborate with physicians and clinical staff on drug dosing and quality metrics.
  • Retail/Specialty Pharmacy Technician: Perform pharmacy technician duties for retail pharmacy under pharmacist supervision: receive prescriptions, fill and dispense, respond to patient queries, maintain records, assist with insurance authorization, and participate in medication assistance programs.
