Position Summary
This position provides American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing patients and families in a wide variety of hospital and outpatient clinical settings, and English interpretation of ASL for medical providers and other hospital/clinic support staff.
Position Duties- Concurrently perform English to ASL and ASL to English interpretation of patient care needs between patient, family, and health care team members to ensure understanding of needs, issues, and concerns.
- Provide recommendations to the health care team on how best to improve communication needs of patient and/or family.
- Assist with providing for the deaf and hard of hearing patient/family communication needs, including assessing and adjusting lighting, seating arrangements, and access to visual aides or recommending additional communication resources such as a certified deaf interpreter (CDI).
- Receive, acknowledge, and accept assignments from ASL Interpreter Coordinator.
- Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as requested.
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience –
Required
- American Sign Language experience in a hospital setting –
Required - American Sign Language experience interpreting for children –
Required
- Fully fluent in American Sign Language to English and English to American Sign Language –
Required - Computer skills –
Required - Must possess strong concentration, speaking, and listening skills –
Required - Fluency in spoken Spanish –
Preferred
- Current national professional certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID certified) or Board of Evaluation of Interpreters (BEI certified) –
Required - Current license from the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and the Hard of Hearing (ACDHH) –
