U-Haul International, Inc. and Repwest Insurance seeks an experienced In-House Counsel with 5+ years of relevant experience to support legal, insurance, and claims matters arising from auto rental operations and auto insurance programs. This in-office role will work closely with insurers, a third-party claims administrator (TPA), and outside counsel to manage a high-volume litigation and claims portfolio, with a focus on coverage, bad faith analysis, and strategic risk management.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct insurance coverage and bad faith analysis related to auto rental and auto insurance claims
- Evaluate and address insurance conflicts, including primary/excess coverage issues and insurer obligations
- Partner with and assist a third-party claims administrator (TPA) in the handling and resolution of auto liability, bodily injury, property damage, and related claims
- Review and analyze complaints, pleadings, discovery, and motion practice in auto-related litigation
- Perform settlement analysis, including exposure assessment, liability evaluation, and strategic recommendations
- Monitor and manage outside defense counsel, including oversight of litigation strategy, budgets, and performance
- Provide coverage analysis and legal research involving auto policies, rental agreements, indemnity provisions, and statutory frameworks
- Manage a large portfolio of auto-related matters, prioritizing workload and ensuring timely resolution
- Communicate effectively with internal business partners, insurers, TPAs, and external counsel regarding risk, strategy, and outcomes
- J.D. from an accredited law school
- 5+ years of experience in auto insurance, insurance defense, coverage, bad faith, or in-house claims/legal roles
- Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (in good standing)
- Strong knowledge of auto liability, insurance coverage, claims handling practices, and litigation processes
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple matters independently in a high-volume environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven self-starter with sound judgment and strong organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, operationally focused environment
- Collaborative mindset with the ability to provide practical, business-oriented legal advice
