Business Unit Manager (BUMa)

Responsible for maintaining positive operating margin at the laboratory level, meeting annual budget goals, overseeing laboratory personnel, ensuring compliance with corporate and regulatory policies, and serving as a liaison with corporate partners.

Responsibilities
  • Lead, schedule, and train laboratory employees
  • Maintain highest quality and efficiency standards in laboratory operations
  • Ensure coverage, performance, morale, and teamwork
  • Promote company vision and values
  • Manage technical conduct, quality control, and record‑keeping of analytical evaluations
  • Supervise and coordinate all technical activities within scientific and business parameters
  • Plan, organize, direct, and control operations to achieve company goals
  • Adhere to and document health, safety, and environmental programs
  • Establish professional business relationships with clients and industry partners
  • Create marketing strategies, technical proposals, and expand business plans
  • Contribute to financial growth and development
  • Coordinate activities with other location managers to avoid duplication
  • Handle budgeting, capital expenses, senior staff decisions, client needs, revenue and profit growth, and cost control
  • Oversee daily laboratory, quality, logistics, and managerial duties
  • Represent the laboratory in technical meetings
  • Partner with Sales and Marketing teams for quotations of major technical studies
  • Propose major investments to executives
  • Monitor laboratory expenses against the annual budget
  • Approve major expenses and maintain cost control within guidelines
  • Analyze monthly laboratory indicators (operating costs, labor costs, turnaround time, productivity)
  • Ensure compliance with employment policies and procedures
  • Conduct annual performance reviews for direct reports and review other lab personnel
  • Handle employee relations issues in line with company policies and HR support
  • Coordinate interaction among laboratory departments
  • Follow and propose changes to Quality System documents relevant to employment responsibilities
  • Operate safely and efficiently
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • MS or PhD preferred
  • At least 10 years of supervisory experience
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in laboratory operations, including profit/loss accountability ($5M+ Net Sales or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated success in improving operational, profit, quality, and safety performance
  • Familiarity with laboratory operations and services
  • Knowledge of EPA, DOT, OSHA, and DOL regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong customer relations skills
  • Ability to manage business at a profit/loss level
  • Ability to control operating budgets
  • Capability to develop and enforce policies and operating practices
  • Strong prioritization, delegation, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills
  • Professional proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Authorization to work in the United States without restriction or sponsorship
