POSITION SUMMARYThis position is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to the claims and litigation management team. It includes implementation of best practices, financial responsibility for performance of claims including oversight of claim reserves and outcomes, and providing legal advice and direction related to risk management incidents, potential claims, and litigated matters. The leader reports directly to the company’s offshore captive insurance company board, interacts with domestic and international insurance market contacts, and oversees Claims Directors and the Claims team, managing high-exposure cases and ensuring cost‑effective and successful management of Hospital and Physician Professional Liability (HPPL), General Liability (GL), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), and other liability claims and litigation.
The role coordinates with other risk area functions to reduce the financial impact of liability risk and claims on the organization.
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or equivalent education and experience.
Expert‑level knowledge of principles, practices, and operations in the assigned area, obtained through five to seven years of progressively responsible managerial experience, including two to three years at a healthcare system or large multi‑operational corporate environment.
Completion of a Juris Doctorate (J.D.) and admission to at least one state bar, plus five to seven years of medical professional liability management experience. Must gain admission to the AZ bar through reciprocity or in‑house counsel provision. Demonstrated expertise and a proven track record of driving outcomes and achieving organizational goals.
Demonstrated leadership skills such as anticipating customer needs, managing budgets, building partnerships, solving complex problems, persuading others, developing best practices, mentoring staff, and improving service excellence for customers, patients, and employees.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS- Strong negotiating skills and advanced knowledge of healthcare claims, risk management, quality management, and performance improvement.
- In‑house liability claims management experience and familiarity with related healthcare regulations or litigation.
- Prior managerial experience and additional related education or experience.
