APEL Extrusions is an independent extruder, finisher and fabricator of aluminum extrusions serving the commercial, residential, and industrial markets of Western Canada and the Western United States. With facilities in Calgary, Canada, Coburg, Oregon, and Phoenix, APEL extrudes, paints, anodizes, and fabricates aluminum products using six extrusion presses (2 in Calgary, 3 in Oregon, and 1 in Phoenix) and provides a full array of finishing capabilities across more than 600,000 square feet of modern manufacturing space employing over 300 people.

Job Summary

APEL Extrusions has an immediate requirement for a qualified Manufacturing/Process Engineer in its Phoenix, AZ facility. Under the direction of the Maintenance and Engineering Manager, this position will provide engineering and process management support for implementing technical solutions in extrusion, painting, anodizing, and fabrication of aluminum products. The incumbent will develop and implement initiatives to improve operational capability, cost management, safety, productivity, and quality.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Establish Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) ensuring safety, quality, and productivity are monitored, corrected, and improved.
  • Analyze production data, budgets, and schedules to meet performance metrics.
  • Collaborate with departments to continuously improve processes through waste reduction and productivity initiatives.
  • Assist in developing APEL’s technical and operating capabilities through design and installation of manufacturing tools and machinery.
  • Assist in preventive maintenance functions, establishing priorities and initiatives to ensure equipment availability and reliability.
  • Provide daily floor support to resolve equipment and process issues.
  • Create documentation and standards, maintaining standard operating procedures, flow charts, and time studies.
  • Maintain contacts and develop partnerships with leading suppliers to stay current with industry best practices.
  • Act as a project manager on manufacturing engineering activities, ensuring program plans, resources, budgets, and schedules are met.
  • Identify key process inputs for in‑control and capable processes and implement standardized systems.

The Manufacturing/Process Engineer will perform complex engineering work, exercising independent judgment and action. Responsibilities include designing, optimizing, and maintaining production processes to maximize efficiency, quality, and safety while reducing costs. The role tracks equipment downtime, identifies occurrence frequencies, and develops preventative/predictive programs to improve performance. Troubleshooting production issues, developing manufacturing systems, selecting equipment, and implementing lean methodologies are also key tasks.

The engineer will create documentation, train staff, and improve process workflows.

Qualifications & Competencies
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Project planning skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Technical understanding of basic hydraulics, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Relentless focus on driving process stability.
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, and execute.
  • Hands‑on engineer with knowledge of automated systems.
  • People‑oriented with an innate ability to establish credibility.
  • Analytical thinking, problem solving, and cross‑functional collaboration.
  • Experience and training in Lean and Six Sigma concepts.
  • Training in various manufacturing concepts and technologies.
  • Preferred:
    Engineering experience in a manufacturing/plant environment.
