Job Description

ResponsibilitiesMachines/fabricates prototype and replacement parts for equipment, machines and weapon systems of various types and alloys. Makes repairs to machinery, mechanical equipment and/or optical equipment. Interprets verbal and written instructions and specifications; plans and lays out work using machinist’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Uses design software (CNC, CAM) to model cutting paths and program tool changers. Programs, sets up and operates manual and CNC machine tools;
machines and shapes metal parts to close tolerances; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds. Demonstrates knowledge of working properties of common metals; selects materials, parts and equipment needed; fits and assembles parts into mechanical equipment and machines; makes necessary adjustments to complete repairs. Programs mills and lathes by entering instructions, including zero and reference points;
sets tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculates requirements; proves part programs. Maintains quality and safety standards; keeps records; maintains equipment and supplies. Provides iterative feedback to customers. Shares work progress and information with fellow machinists. Performs other duties as required to complete the assigned mission. This position is covered under the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Education / Licenses / Certifications / Experience Requirements- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have one of the following:
- Two years of machinist technical school experience and 7 years of experience as a machine shop equipment operator, or
- 9 years of experience working in a machine shop environment with CNC machines.
- Ability to read blueprints and interpret complex multi-view drawings.
- Experience designing 3D parts using CAD software (AutoCAD, Solid Works, etc.).
- Experience with CAM software to program CNC machines (Master Cam, CAMWorks, etc.).
- Knowledge of G-Code, G-BR, STL, and STEP files.
- Ability to modify G-Code for small adjustments in CNC machining.
- Proficiency in programming, setting up and operating manual and CNC equipment such as mills, lathes and plasma tables.
- Ability to assess tools required for particular materials and program machines accordingly.
- Experience operating and using precision measuring instruments common to the trade.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical and periodic retests.
- Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for assigned tasks.
- Must work in extreme weather conditions, including summer temperatures up to 120°F.
- Must lift 100 lbs unassisted.
- Must work outdoors and in various weather conditions.
- Must squat, crouch, and stoop frequently.
- Must kneel, bend, and stand during maintenance machinist duties.
- Must meet the physical requirements for the SOPs for Welding, ELMO, and Transducers Departments.
