We are partnering with a growing Phoenix-area manufacturer of Made in the USA material handling products for the construction and electrical industries. With a strong 'can-do' culture, they are expanded rapidly — and they need an experienced Production & Operations Manager to stabilize operations, cut lead times, and build the systems and processes that will carry them into the next phase of growth.
This is a transformation role, not a maintenance role. You'll be on the floor, earning trust, and building infrastructure from scratch. If you've done it before in a high-mix, custom fabrication environment — we want to talk.
Key Responsibilities Production Execution & Throughput- Own daily shop floor operations across cutting, machining, welding, and outsourced finishing
- Drive scheduling and workflow improvements to reduce lead times by 30–50%
- Balance workload between custom jobs and standard product runs
- Identify and eliminate bottlenecks, including outsourced laser cutting and welding queues
- Implement standardized work instructions and routing structures
- Introduce visual management, job tracking, and WIP controls
- Develop capacity planning models for both custom and standard product lines
- Build and implement a practical, right-sized quality management system
- Establish inspection checkpoints and documentation at each production stage
- Create operator-level accountability for quality — not just end-of-line inspection
- Replace spreadsheet-driven scheduling with structured production control methods
- Improve ERP utilization for scheduling and job costing (Sage 100 / Job Ops)
- Implement and track key KPIs: on-time delivery, throughput, scrap, and labor efficiency
- Manage outsourced laser cutting and powder coating vendors
- Evaluate in sourcing opportunities based on cost, throughput, and quality tradeoffs
- Lead and develop a team of fabricators, welders, and machinists
- Establish clear accountability, performance expectations, and a culture of continuous improvement
- 5–10+ years of experience in metal fabrication, job shop, or mixed-mode manufacturing
- Proven success managing high-mix, low-volume fabrication environments
- Experience building processes and systems from scratch — not just maintaining existing ones
- Deep understanding of welding, sheet metal, and structural fabrication workflows
- Track record of improving throughput, reducing lead times, or increasing shop efficiency
- Hands‑on leadership style — comfortable on the floor, not just behind a desk
- Strong communicator who can build trust with shop-floor teams and company leadership
- Experience with ERP or MES systems for scheduling and job costing
- Lean Manufacturing experience: 5S, Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen
- Background across both custom fabrication and product-based manufacturing
- Experience managing outsourced processes (laser cutting, powder coating)
- Familiarity with Sage 100 or similar ERP platforms
