Job Overview
Working for a world‑class leader in building structures, a Schuff Steel Production Fitter‑Welder applies expertise in steel and bridge fabrication to construct complex and high‑profile projects in the commercial, bridge, and industrial sectors.
Critical to production, the position assembles and fits drawing dimensions for structural, plate, and mechanical materials while welding a wide variety of materials in all positions. The fitter must understand heat reactions of structural metals, read blueprints, and maintain a high level of proficiency to meet welding test requirements.

Core Responsibilities- Follow applicable welding procedures (AWS, AISC).
- Perform welding at ground level, above ground, and below ground in any required position.
- Chip, grind, and prepare material for welding or finish.
- Weld structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, tanks, and other metal components.
- Straighten materials using heat or flame.
- Perform gouging and scarfing as needed.
- Pass welding test in accordance with AWS D1.1.
- Receive instructions, prints, sketches, and work orders.
- Read and interpret blueprints and plan fitting operations.
- Assist in handling and spreading of material, assembling according to detail drawings, and placing bolts, drift pins, and other fasteners.
- Lay out work lines or fit up jigs for positioning material; check, square, and scribe connections.
- Ensure work conforms to drawings and notes.
- Clean up material by grinding or chipping.
- Perform burn, tack, or assembly welding, and make minor layout adjustments.
- Spot paint for identification marks.
- Move material and welding equipment between work areas.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Perform other routine duties per management direction.
- Adhere to safety rules and PPE requirements.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- 1 year of stable work experience in welding or fitting.
- Pass required weld and fitter tests.
- Certification in AWS D1.1 weld test.
- Proficiency with hand tools and welding equipment.
- Ability to read safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.
- Mathematical skills to calculate measurements in required units.
- Reasoning ability to apply instructions and solve problems involving multiple variables.
