Role Overview
The Yard Inventory Specialist plays a critical role in supporting production and project success by managing the flow, tracking, storage, and organization of materials, components, and assemblies throughout the modular construction yard. This position ensures inventory accuracy, supports production schedules, coordinates receiving and shipping activities, and maintains an organized, efficient yard environment. Working closely with production, purchasing, and project teams, the Yard Inventory Specialist helps ensure materials are available when needed while maintaining accurate inventory records and safe operating practices.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain accurate inventory records for raw materials, purchased components, work-in-process (WIP), and finished assemblies, ensuring inventory is properly tracked by project and location.
- Receive, inspect, verify, label, and store incoming materials while resolving discrepancies with vendors and internal stakeholders.
- Perform cycle counts, inventory audits, and inventory reconciliations to maintain inventory accuracy and identify root causes of variances.
- Stage materials and assemblies according to production schedules and project requirements to ensure timely material availability.
- Monitor inventory levels and communicate replenishment needs to support uninterrupted production and project timelines.
- Maintain organized storage areas and track the physical location of materials, components, assemblies, and finished products throughout the yard.
- Coordinate the movement, storage, and shipment of materials, assemblies, and finished products while maintaining accurate documentation and records.
- Track work-in-process inventory and assembly status throughout production and provide inventory and material status updates to project and production teams.
- Maintain inventory databases, location records, and inventory-related reports using inventory management and ERP systems.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve inventory accuracy, material flow, yard organization, and operational efficiency.
- Follow all company safety policies, quality standards, and OSHA requirements while maintaining a clean and organized work environment.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in inventory control, warehouse operations, logistics, or construction materials management.
- Experience using inventory management software, warehouse management systems, or ERP systems.
- Ability to read and interpret bills of materials (BOMs), packing slips, bills of lading (BOLs), and project documentation.
- Forklift certification or ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and industrial environments.
- 3+ years of inventory, warehouse, or materials management experience.
- Experience in modular construction, manufacturing, prefabrication, or industrial assembly environments.
- Experience tracking project-based inventory and work-in-process (WIP) assemblies.
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and 5S practices.
- Experience coordinating shipping, receiving, and oversized-load logistics.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- High attention to detail and inventory accuracy.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
