Job DescriptionThis role focuses on welding and fabricating large steel tanks using flux core dual shield processes and blueprint specifications. You will perform structural steel welding in multiple positions, complete weld tests to qualify, and contribute to the fabrication of high-quality products in a busy steel fabrication yard.
Responsibilities- Weld and fabricate large steel tanks ranging from approximately 1/4 inch thickness using detailed blueprints and specifications.
- Perform flux core dual shield welding using primarily .045 wire, with occasional use of 1/16 inch wire as required.
- Execute structural steel welds in 2G horizontal, 3G vertical, and 4G overhead positions to meet production and quality standards.
- Complete weld tests on 1/2 inch plate with an open root and back grind in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions to demonstrate proficiency and maintain qualification.
- Interpret and follow blueprints, drawings, and fabrication details to ensure accurate layout, fit-up, and final welds.
- Use basic hand tools such as adjustable wrenches, pry bars, mallets, tape measures, and chipping hammers to support fit-up, fabrication, and finishing tasks.
- Inspect welds for quality, accuracy, and conformance to specifications, and perform necessary rework when required.
- Work safely in a steel fabrication yard environment, following all safety procedures and wearing appropriate protective equipment.
- Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize work, meet production schedules, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
- At least 3 years of recent flux core welding experience, including dual shield flux core welding.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints for welding and fabrication work.
- Ability to weld confidently and consistently in 2G horizontal, 3G vertical, and 4G overhead positions.
- Demonstrated experience with flux core structural steel welding.
- Capability to pass a weld test on 1/2 inch plate with an open root and back grind in 2G, 3G, and 4G positions.
- Strong understanding of welding safety practices and proper use of protective equipment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced fabrication environment.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with pipe welding and structural fabrication is beneficial.
- Previous exposure to TIG welding is a plus, although this role does not require TIG welding.
- Solid basic math and measurement skills for accurate layout and fabrication.
- Ownership of basic tools, including adjustable wrenches, a pry bar, 3 lb and 5 lb mallets, a tape measure, and a chipping hammer.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high‑quality welds and fabrications.
The position is based in a steel fabrication yard that is covered but open air, providing protection from direct elements while maintaining good ventilation. It is a first‑shift role starting at 4:00 AM and working until 2:30 PM on a four‑day schedule (4x10s). Operations may run on extended schedules such as five 10‑hour days per week depending on workload. The environment involves working around heavy steel, fabrication equipment, and welding operations, requiring adherence to safety procedures and use of appropriate personal protective equipment and work‑appropriate attire suitable for a steel fabrication setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $27.00 - $30.00/hr.
