Position Summary

The External Communications Manager is responsible for communicating with external stakeholders—including media, patient families, partners, and other audiences—to support overall awareness of Phoenix Children’s and its mission. The role involves developing outreach strategies and crafting compelling communications that inspire behavior change, delivering them through appropriate channels, and gathering feedback—all while keeping the specific communication purpose and goal in mind. The Manager plans, writes, and edits ongoing strategies for external audiences and advises internal stakeholders on content, timing, and frequency.

Duties also include media relations, content strategy, social media and influencer marketing, speaker bureaus, and event support. The key to effectiveness at Phoenix Children’s is consistency and constancy. Excellent writing and interpersonal relationship skills are essential to success in this role. The External Communications Manager reports to the Communications Director.

Position Duties
  • Communications Planning
    • Develops and executes External Communications Plans; defines desired results and implements details in line with agreed goals.
  • Relationship Management
    • Builds and maintains relationships with media members at local and national levels, external stakeholders, senior leadership, and provider leadership to ensure smooth flow of communications.
    • Works with senior leadership to prepare them for media training and message delivery.
  • Project Management
    • Creates systems and leads project management efforts to oversee workload, resources, and internal/external teams, delivering multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously while meeting deadlines, quality measures, and budgets.
  • Research and Strategy Development
    • Uses research to understand stakeholders for developing appropriate strategies and tactics, aligning with Phoenix Children’s strategic objectives and needs.
  • Content Management
    • Develops compelling content to design messages that are resonant, timely, and appropriate for each communication channel.
    • Provides speaking points, key messages, and proofreading of communication materials for consistency in style, tone, and voice.
    • Generates reports and presents information to upper-level management.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Performs additional job-related duties as requested.
Position Qualifications
  • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Experience
    • Five (5) or more years of experience in Communications, Public Relations, or Marketing.
    • Healthcare experience is preferred.
  • Physical Requirements
    • Occasional physical requirements: sensing textures and temperatures, fine motor skills, pushing/pulling, reaching, sitting, standing, stooping/crouching/kneeling/crawling, tasting/smelling, walking, near vision, far vision, color discrimination.
    • Constant physical requirements: hearing, talking, use of keyboard/mouse/computer equipment, near vision, walking, hearing, talking.
    • Potential to lift up to 35 pounds occasionally.
