Job SummaryThis position is eligible for a 5,000 hiring incentive. The psychiatric nurse provides direct patient care on a rotating schedule, may work any day of the week, and is responsible for patient care during assigned shifts. The nurse establishes patient priorities, evaluates outcomes, administers medications and treatments, participates in treatment planning, delivers therapeutic interventions, provides patient education, and responds to psychiatric and medical emergencies.
The nurse also aids in staff orientation, supervision, and performance evaluation, and ensures compliance with all hospital and regulatory policies.
- Provide direct psychiatric and medical nursing care, observe behavior and physical status.
- Transcribe medical orders, chart reviews, administer medication and treatments, and count accountable medication.
- Assist physicians during sick calls and other clinical duties.
- Document in patient records, complete nursing assessments, summaries, and other required documentation.
- Provide orientation, supervision, and on‑job training to new employees and assist in performance evaluation.
- Attend in‑service training to maintain or increase knowledge of leadership, supervision, medical/surgical and psychiatric nursing updates, and legal aspects of nursing.
- Perform other related duties as assigned (approximately 5%‑10%).
- Knowledge Of:
- Principles of psychiatric nursing and general principles of medical, geriatric, and forensic nursing.
- Development of resident care plans, psychiatric rehabilitation, pharmacology, and infection control.
- Hospital and treatment center policies, patient rights, and responsibilities.
- Performance improvement activities, computer programs, and health record software.
- Performance Management, Continuous Quality Improvement, and Lean methodologies.
- Skill In:
- Assessment of patient’s physical and mental status.
- Meeting patient needs.
- Communicating with patients, nursing staff, treatment team members, and other departments.
- Providing therapeutic interventions and education to patients and staff.
- Documenting observations and interventions.
- Effective oral and written communication techniques.
- Ability To:
- Assess patient’s physical and mental status and communicate with patients, nursing staff, treatment team members, and other departments.
- Implement therapeutic interventions.
- Provide education to patients and staff.
- Document observations and interventions accurately.

Two years of work experience as a psychiatric nurse or in the care and treatment of the mentally ill, developmentally disabled, or physically ill and/or incapacitated patients.
Pre‑Employment Requirements- Valid and current RN license to practice in Arizona.
- Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and NVCI certification.
- State Hospital employees must possess a valid Level One fingerprint clearance card or apply for one within seven working days of beginning employment.
