Job Summary

Single departmental function supervision and/or shift supervision in accordance with hospital policy. Responsible for the daily administration of tasks, scheduling and problem solving related to assigned areas. Position provides leadership to the hospital staff in the absence of the Department Directors and Administration. Responsible for the coordination of care resources, problem resolution, adequate staffing and communication to Department Directors and Administration with issues of concern.

Serves as an administrative representative for the hospital. Serves as liaison with Staff, Management and the Medical Staff.

Responsibilities
  • Interpret and implement organizational goals.
  • Identify and prioritize tasks, estimate patient workloads, ensure staffing reflects workloads, ensure compliance with policies & procedures, standards of practice and standards of care. Assist with ensuring quality, customer service focused care is delivered from pre-admission to post-discharge. Provide data, information and reports in a timely manner. Coordinate all patient admissions, transfers, bed assignments and physician orders; obtain clinical, demographic and third party payor information and authorization as necessary.
  • Manage acuity, resolve team conflict, apply team-building skills, develop self-directed teams, assist in new employee orientation teaching customer service goals, efficiency, accountability, clinical skills and conflict resolution, identify performance and coach. Keep staff informed by frequent communication of policy changes, organizational goals, customer service issues, and department performance issues. Assist in maintaining productivity guidelines. Assist case managers and staff in discharge planning from a resource consumption perspective.

    Provide adequate competent staff to meet patient care needs in a fiscally responsible manner. Ensure staff compliance with regulatory agency requirements. Mentor staff on the day-to-day resolution of issues and concerns.
  • Act as liaison between physicians, staff, patients, family members, administration and other departments. Interact with admitting physician, provide alternatives to inpatient admission when appropriate.
  • Identify, propose solutions, and assist in implementation of ideas for improvements in patient care and department/hospital operations. Function as a patient advocate. Participate in successful implementation of changes. Participate in hospital activities to improve efficiency, customer service, program development and revenue enhancement. Identify opportunities and implement strategies to decrease waste in supplies, equipment and linen use. Assist staff in identifying patient problems and making good patient care decisions.

    Direct staff in maintaining a safe environment and customer satisfaction when staffing or resources need to be stretched. Analyze complex problems and identify consequences of various solutions. Participate in hospital-wide process improvement activities. Review patient admissions, including observation charts for medical necessity and appropriateness. Provide education to staff and physicians pertaining to utilization management.
  • Provide leadership, role model a standard of excellence for the staff. Educate and mentor staff and act as resource person on unit and elsewhere in hospital. Accept and complete projects/assignments as requested by CNO and/or director. Recognize the need for and obtain additional resources or guidance as necessary. Serve as hospital representative to employees to ensure continuous communication and support with hospital administrators and department directors.
