ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and collaboration with other hospital departments.
  • Establishes and implements policies and procedures and maintains departmental compliance with accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Investigates all incidents and accidents taking the appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, physicians, and employees.
  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the hospital.
  • Reviews short-term and long-term plans, strategies, and systems that identify and utilize available resources to efficiently manage daily operations, accomplish goals and objectives with specific target dates.
  • Oversees management of department operationally and fiscally.
  • Provides administrative and financial accountability for planning, directing, staffing, coordinating, and controlling the functions and activities of all phases of the perioperative services departments.
  • Reviews daily the proposed OR schedule. Communicates with OR scheduling for clarification of unique procedures, protocols, and inventory descriptions to facilitate the scheduling process. Maintains continuous communication with schedulers to help solve scheduling problems and/or OR utilization.
  • Coordinates schedule and staffing needs to ensure proper staff coverage and sterile equipment are ready and available.
  • Serves as a liaison with physicians, allied health personnel, and organizational vendors to identify and prioritize specialty service supply, instrument, and equipment needs for patient procedures. Reviews future OR schedule to prepare required equipment and resolve supply and equipment conflicts, providing a general overview of the physicians and their needs.
  • Promotes/supports growth of others through precepting, mentoring, and orientation when appropriate. Serves as a positive, clinical role model to facilitate staff development, providing pertinent feedback to CNO and hospital Administration. Determines the competence and qualifications of the team and providing and implementing continuing education programs, and in-services to meet the needs of the department.
  • Maintains supply inventory, including assuring the procurement of necessary supplies, equipment and expertise, and the timely delivery of needed care, and alerting administration of these needs in a timely manner.
  • Monitors and continuously improves metrics by collecting and analyzing data related to quality or performance improvement projects that apply to perioperative services, providing solutions and actions plans to reach departmental metrics and goals.
  • Facilitates or serves as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning and providing direct patient care, acts as a patient advocate and maintains privacy and confidentiality of appropriate information. Ensures safe patient care within the perioperative unit, ensuring that proper patient identification, time outs, resources, and supplies are available to maintain a safe environment.
  • Assists perioperative personnel in evaluating practice and creating strategies for further improvement. Helps, if necessary, to assess the patient’s condition before a surgical procedure and works with a physician to develop the care plan for the patient during the surgery.
  • Participates actively in professional organizations that provide evidence-based education and resources for the perioperative setting. These organizations include, but are not limited to, Association of peri Operative Registered Nurses (AORN) and American Society of Post-Anesthesia Nursing (ASPAN).
