Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant – Neuro Critical Care

Position Summary

Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) – Pediatric Neurology Critical Care. Phoenix Children’s, a nationally recognized pediatric academic medical center, seeks an experienced and motivated Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing Pediatric Neurology Critical Care team. This role offers a unique opportunity to practice within one of the nation’s premier pediatric neuroscience programs, featuring a large and collaborative Department of Neurology, an established Pediatric Neurocritical Care service, and a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering cutting‑edge care to critically ill neonates, children, and adolescents with neurological disease and injury.

the Program

Our pediatric neuroscience center provides comprehensive care for patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical conditions. Neurocritical Care providers work closely with Pediatric, Cardiovascular, Neonatal Intensive Care, Neurosurgery, Neuro‑Oncology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Emergency Medicine to manage patients with:

  • Acute brain injury and traumatic brain injury
  • Status epilepticus and refractory epilepsy
  • Stroke and cerebrovascular disorders
  • CNS infections and inflammatory disease
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Hypoxic ischemic injury and altered mental status
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring and advanced neuromonitoring
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive inpatient management for critically ill pediatric neurology patients
  • Perform history and physical examinations, develop care plans, and coordinate multidisciplinary care
  • Help manage neurologic emergencies and neurocritical care patients in collaboration with attending physicians
  • Collaborate with consulting services and intensive care teams
  • Participate in family‑centered communication and education
  • Contribute to quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence‑based practice initiatives
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
  • Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure in Arizona
  • Minimum of 3 years pediatric experience
  • Neurology experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to collaborative practice
  • Experienced candidates preferred; exceptional new graduates with significant pediatric critical care RN experience may be considered
Position Duties
  • Conduct comprehensive health history, physical assessments and plans for infants, children and young adults with acute and chronic health conditions
  • Order and prescribe pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions, and perform other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status
  • Formulate family‑centered plan of care; perform daily documentation as necessary; collaborate and coordinate care with other team members
  • Collect data and analyze when necessary
  • Perform any needed advanced procedures that are associated with credentialing process DOP
  • Utilize the most up‑to‑date evidence‑based practice for plan of care and be able to alter the plan according to family needs and effectiveness
  • Serve as educational resource to patient/family/nursing staff/provider team and other health‑care teams as needed
  • Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competences, certifying body renewals, seeking educational offerings when available, and participating in the professional development of others which may include Advanced Practice Provider students, Residents and Medical Students. Act as preceptor/mentor for those new in the department
  • Demonstrate commitment to patient safety by bringing up concerns appropriately, reporting through appropriate channels, and ensuring change of practice when necessary; demonstrate shared accountability of safe practice
  • Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties as requested
