Position Summary

The pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) is seeking an energetic, acute care pediatric nurse practitioner to join our growing team. Nurse practitioners at the main campus 48‑bed PICU work collaboratively with the medical team and attending physicians to care for high‑acuity intensive care patients ages birth to 18 years and their families. Phoenix Children’s Hospital is a level 1 trauma center with robust programs across various specialties (endocrinology, neurosurgery, hematology/oncology/BMT, liver transplant, nephrology, general surgery, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support).

The PICU sees over 2,000 admissions per year and includes two 8‑bed satellite units for which nurse practitioners provide coverage with an attending physician.

Applicants must have graduated from an acute care pediatric nurse practitioner program. New graduates are accepted, and preference is given to candidates with prior PICU experience as registered nurses. Practitioners work rotating shifts.

Position Duties
  • Conduct comprehensive health history, physical assessments, and develop plans for infants, children, and young adults with acute and chronic conditions.
  • Use advanced assessment skills to manage a cohort of patients in collaboration with residents, fellows, and attending physicians.
  • Order and prescribe pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions, and perform other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status.
  • Formulate family‑centered plan of care during interprofessional rounds.
  • Perform daily documentation and billing.
  • Collaborate and coordinate care with interdisciplinary services.
  • Perform critical‑care related procedures, including intubations, central line and arterial line placement, lumbar punctures, and chest tubes.
  • Use the most up‑to‑date evidence‑based practice for care planning, adjusting plans based on family needs and effectiveness.
  • Serve as an educational resource to patients, families, and the healthcare team.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, maintaining required competencies and certifications.
  • Act as a preceptor/mentor for new members of the department and other learners.
  • Demonstrate commitment to patient safety and shared accountability of safe practice, reporting concerns through appropriate channels.
  • Perform miscellaneous job‑related duties, research, and education as requested.
Qualifications
  • Graduate from an acute care pediatric nurse practitioner program.
  • New graduates accepted; preference for candidates with prior PICU RN experience.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Proficiency in critical care procedures and evidence‑based practice.
  • Strong communication skills and teamwork.
