Purpose StatementThe Person al Care Registered Nurse is responsible for the care of an individual student. The exact needs of the student will be discussed in the interview. They are required to hold a valid RN license and will work with the Special Education Department to ensure all IEP requirements are followed.
Essential Functions- Assist in the care of the student in accordance with the student's care plan.
- Maintain information about the health and developmental status of students.
- Support nursing care plans with specific goals and interventions delineating school nursing action unique to student’s needs.
- Manage student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Document nursing care via computer program.
- Participate in a variety of meetings (e.g., staff, district, IEPs, 504’s, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering medical and health-related data/information required to perform functions related to student.
- Report student/school health and safety status to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g., fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining student personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.
- Respond to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel/agency for resolution.
- Maintain current knowledge in the area of specialization.
- Support goals and objectives of the school and district.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Apply nursing assessment tools.
- Operate standard office equipment, including personal computers and pertinent software applications.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records.
- Perform age appropriate application of the nursing process; epidemiological nursing framework for pediatric influences in the school setting (e.g., socio-demographic and other societal impacts).
- Assess common pediatric diseases/processes (e.g., chronic health conditions, birth defects).
- Understand federal and state mandates relating to school health services/practices.
- Work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; establish and maintain constructive relationships, adapt to changing work priorities, maintain confidentiality, and exhibit tact and patience.
- Perform age appropriate pediatric and adolescent physical/behavioral assessments; follow school nurse policies and practice as dictated by state and district guidelines.
- Apply appropriate nursing theory as a basis for decision-making in school nursing practice.
Working under limited supervision using the Scope and Standards of Practice for School Nursing; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of resources from other work units.
Work EnvironmentThe usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. The job is performed under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
ExperienceMinimum two years recent experience in a public nursing medical, pediatric or emergency room setting.
EducationBachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
Equivalency Required Testing:Certificates and Licenses
- Current professional nursing license
- Current CPR certification
- Arizona Nursing Certification or
- National School Nurse Certification (to be acquired within three years of hire)
- Continuing Education/Training
- Criminal Background Clearance
- Valid Arizona DPS Level I IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
