Position Summary
RN Poison Information Specialist - This full‑time mid‑shift (32 hours per week) position is located on the campus of Banner University Medical Center – Phoenix and is not a remote role. The role involves direct care and triage of poison exposures received via a 24‑hour emergency telephone line. The incumbent triages and provides accurate and complete management information to the public, physicians, nurses, pharmacists, emergency medical personnel, and other health care providers.
When a poison exposure occurs, they conduct a toxicological assessment, recommend a treatment plan, and provide documentation and follow‑up to ensure positive outcomes.
This position is ideal for an RN with 3‑5 years of recent clinical experience in the ED, ICU or a Poison Information Center. The role focuses on telehealth only (no bedside care), and includes opportunities for continued learning, professional certification, national conferences, and publication.
Incumbent must sit for the America’s Poison Centers Certified Specialist in Poison Information exam during the first qualifying exam cycle.
Shift: 3:00 pm – 11:30 pm with rotating weekend shifts (required). Pay and benefits include participation in a range of health, financial, and security benefits.
Core Functions- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Arizona (or a compact state).
- Minimum 3–5 years of recent clinical experience, preferably in a Critical Care Unit, Emergency Department, or a Poison Information Center.
- Potential American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) certification within 5 years of hire; re‑certification required every seven years.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy in crisis communication.
- Thorough history‑taking skills and basic mathematical capability.
- Ability to prioritize incoming and follow‑up calls and function effectively in stress‑related situations.
- Clear and compassionate verbal and written skills with confidentiality.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Professional certification preferred.
- Additional related toxicology education and/or experience preferred.
