Job Description

Summary:

The School Nurse provides leadership and guidance in the development and maintenance of a total School Health Program. Functions as manager of health‑care services, deliverer of health services, advocate for children’s rights, counselor, and educator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Utilize district technologies and attend required training.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Comply with state law, district policies, and regulations.
  • Conduct health appraisals: assess and evaluate health and developmental status of students, establish nursing diagnoses, and prioritize actions.
  • Screen students: vision and hearing per state mandates, scoliosis, height, and weight.
  • Provide health counseling: assist pupils and families, locate community resources, arrange appointments, and obtain transportation.
  • Assist special‑education programs: participate in IEP and 504 plan development.
  • Assist other disciplines as needed, including vision and hearing screening for evaluations and serve on response‑to‑intervention teams.
  • Implement communicable disease program; prevent and control communicable diseases in compliance with local and state regulations.
  • Manage chronic health conditions at school (diabetes, asthma, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, etc.).
  • Perform specialized procedures for students with special health needs: glucose monitoring, insulin administration, medication, bladder catheterization, diapering, tube feeding, tracheostomy care, and emotional support.
  • Promote environmental health and accident prevention; complete accident reports; inspect premises.
  • Provide health education: serve as consultant and resource person, deliver curriculum content.
  • Act as liaison between parents, school, and community health matters; collaborate with social worker and community worker.
  • Provide care for sick and injured students, follow school policy, intervene with Child Protective Services when appropriate.
  • Document all care electronically daily.
  • Provide on‑site in‑services to staff: blood borne pathogens, medication administration, and other relevant topics.
  • Partner with agencies to bring programs: dental services, asthma assessment, school‑based health center, and on‑site immunizations.
  • Bill Medicaid through MIPS for eligible students on IEPs; collaborate with health agencies, report data to ADHS, and complete state‑mandated reports.
  • Perform related duties as determined by the Director of Student Services and School Administrator.
Supervision Received

The School Nurse reports to the Building Administrator, the Health and Wellness Coordinator, and the Director of Student Services.

Qualifications Requirements
  • Registered Nurse certification required.
  • Valid Arizona RN license.
  • Two years of clinical nursing experience preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency preferred.
  • State school nurse certification to be achieved within first three years preferred.
  • Knowledge of school health program, public health principles, health education, and public relations.
  • Ability to interpret and execute school health programs, work effectively with diverse cultural and racial groups, and make sound judgments.
  • Basic computer skills.

Condition of employment: all new hires must obtain and maintain a valid Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Skills
  • Language: write reports and business correspondence; present information to board members, staff, and the public.
  • Mathematical: calculate drug dosages, maintain departmental budgets.
  • Reasoning: solve practical problems, interpret instructions.
Physical Demands

Stand and talk frequently; walk and sit as required. May occasionally push or lift up to 50 pounds. Close vision is required for reading handwritten or typed material. Must meet multiple demands from several people and interact with public and staff.

Noise level is quiet to moderate.
