The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests, analyzes results, operates medical equipment, administers treatments and medications, and assists with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.
The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication, checking dosages, avoiding interactions; starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines; administering therapies and treatments; observing the patient and recording observations; and consulting with physicians and other clinicians. The RN teaches patients and their families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.
The RN provides direction to licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates when appropriate, supports efforts to advance clinical knowledge, precepts new‑hire staff and students, assists staff and students in completing competency tasks, and continues to improve knowledge in nursing management and patient care.
- Collect health data systematically and prioritize data collection based on patient condition.
- Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise patient care plans.
- Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s specific health problems.
- Develop patient‑centered, evidence‑based care plans that ensure continuity of care.
- Implement interventions and treatments, including emergency and resuscitative measures per standing orders.
- Provide comprehensive nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs.
- Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations and interventions, and maintain records in a retrievable form.
- Continuously evaluate nursing practice against professional standards and regulations, integrate ethical principles, and enhance cultural competence.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team, patients, families, and other providers to deliver quality care.
- Participate in evidence‑based research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives.
All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of RN experience uired associate or diploma in nursing. For staff with direct responsibility for stroke patients, refer to the stroke‑specific education addendum.
ExperienceRequired:
more than 10 months in a med‑surg or acute specialty setting; at least 1 year RN experience for all float positions.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – certification required.
- Registered Nurse (RN) – state of Arizona license or compact state licensure.
- Unit‑specific certifications as required.
- National certification for the unit‑specific patient population (required); preferred national certifications optional.
