Job DescriptionAECOM is seeking two Archaeology Technicians (Archaeology Technician II) to join our Cultural Resource team. This remote opportunity can be based in Phoenix, AZ or Albuquerque, NM and will report to our Phoenix team.
This is a part‑time, on‑call position meaning workdays and times will be determined on an as‑needed basis. Candidates could work on various cultural resource survey, and archaeological monitoring and excavation projects.
The Archaeological Technician performs fieldwork under the supervision of a Crew Chief, Field Director and/or Principal Investigator. Field projects will primarily be located in New Mexico and Arizona, but opportunities for work in other states may be available. Candidates will need flexibility to travel overnight for field work sessions.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with guidance to complete unfamiliar work activities.
- Conduct cultural resource surveys, archaeological monitoring, and excavations.
- Document archaeological and historical resources; take accurate field notes and complete forms.
- Use digital devices to record field data.
- Use a digital camera to photo‑document artifacts, features, and sites and maintain an accurate photo log.
- Process artifacts (wash, label, and catalog).
- Consult with a supervisor about unusual problems.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education in archaeological fieldwork.
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; travel will be required.
- U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience with field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring.
- Previous technician experience in Arizona and New Mexico highly desired.
- Completion of an archaeological field school highly desired.
- Knowledge of field survey and excavation techniques, ability to process recovered artifacts, and proficiency in filling field and laboratory forms.
- Knowledge of equipment and technology used to collect and record archaeological data, including GPS and Microsoft applications.
- Strong attention to detail, proven ability to follow specific instructions, and excellent work ethic.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with project staff.
- Familiarity with cultural resource management protocols, National Historic Preservation Act, and National Environmental Policy Act.
- Some laboratory analysis experience of prehistoric and historic material.
