Research Scientist Position at Mayo Clinic Arizona

Mayo Clinic Arizona is pioneering the future of cardiovascular care through transformational research in cardiac regeneration and translational cardiovascular science. Our Department of Cardiovascular Medicine seeks an exceptional research scientist to establish a cutting-edge program addressing fundamental challenges in cardiovascular disease through innovative approaches in regenerative medicine, cardio-oncology, or related translational research areas.

This position directly supports Mayo Clinic's transformational vision to shift healthcare from reactive treatment to predictive prevention, aligning with:

  • Genesis Initiative:
Revolutionizing transplant discovery and developing alternatives to cadaveric transplant through pioneering science in cellular engineering, advanced cell therapy products, and bioartificial organ systems.
  • Precure Initiative:
Developing platform products that enable prediction and prevention of diseases through biological signatures, real-time sensing technologies, and algorithmic approaches.
  • Bold. Forward. Transformation:
Accelerating the path from discovery to clinical treatment, leveraging AI and data intelligence to reimagine clinical trials and therapeutic development.

Our department has established significant research infrastructure in cardiac regeneration, with active programs focusing on cell-based therapy for ischemic heart disease, enhancement of hiPSC-derived cardiomyocyte regenerative potency, neonatal heart regeneration and molecular pathways regulating cardiomyocyte proliferation, and nanoparticle-based, cell-type specific drug delivery systems. Our diverse extramural and intramural funding portfolio, inclusive of four active NIH R01 grants totaling over $8 million, demonstrates significant investigator excellence and national competitiveness.

We seek an innovative investigator who will establish a complementary and symbiotic research program in cardiac regeneration, cardio-oncology, or related translational cardiovascular science areas that align with our department's strategic vision and existing research infrastructure.

Candidates should demonstrate technical excellence and a proven track record in cardiovascular research. We welcome applications from investigators in diverse but complementary research areas including:

  • Cardiac regeneration and tissue engineering
  • Cardiac valves regeneration and bioengineering
  • Cardiac electrophysiology and regenerative medicine
  • Cardio-oncology and cardiovascular complications of cancer therapies
  • Stem cell biology and cellular reprogramming
  • Gene therapy and genetic modification approaches
  • Cardiovascular immunology and inflammation
  • Bioengineering and biomaterials for cardiac applications

The successful candidate will join the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and contribute to enterprise-wide research and translational activities. Mayo Clinic Arizona is part of a three-site integrated academic medical center with expectations to integrate locally and collaborate broadly across the enterprise. The research program will be based at Mayo Clinic Arizona (Scottsdale or Phoenix campus).

The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Clinic Arizona is one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing cardiovascular programs in the United States, encompassing six specialized divisions (Cardiac Electrophysiology, Interventional and Structural Heart, Cardiovascular Imaging, Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant, Cardiac Subspecialties, and Comprehensive and Preventive Cardiology), with over 80 providers serving more than 40,000 patient visits annually. Our heart transplant program ranks among the best in the nation, with the shortest median wait time to transplant in Arizona and a 3-year patient survival rate of 92.2%, 9th highest in the U.S. We perform the full spectrum of advanced cardiovascular procedures, from pulsed field ablation and complex coronary interventions to TAVR, transcatheter valve repair, and ventricular assist device implantation, supported by a state-of-the-art Cardiovascular Artificial Intelligence Core Team that is redefining early detection and personalized treatment.

Research is a cornerstone of our departmental identity. In 2025, our faculty produced 184 peer-reviewed publications, with 79% of staff authoring at least one article, and supported 39 active grants and 73 research professionals. Our cardiac regeneration program alone holds four active NIH R01 grants totaling over $8 million, and new research scientist hires will benefit from a rich collaborative infrastructure that includes shared core facilities, an integrated electronic health record, and direct access to Mayo Clinic's enterprise-wide biorepositories and translational science platforms.

The successful candidate will join a department that couples world-class clinical volume with a deeply committed research culture, creating an unparalleled environment to develop and sustain an independent, nationally competitive research…
