Purpose Statement: The Nutrition & Wellness Worker II supports food service activities at the assigned location. Responsibilities include directing staff, producing meals that meet mandated nutritional standards, preparing written communications, and ensuring compliance with health standards and the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs.
This position reports to the Central Kitchen Manager.
Essential Functions- Monitor, clean and maintain storage, food preparation, and serving areas to ensure safe, sanitary conditions and compliance with health requirements.
- Estimate food preparation amounts to meet projected meal requirements and minimize waste.
- Evaluate prepared food for flavor, appearance and temperature to meet student and staff expectations.
- Inspect food and supply deliveries to verify quantity, quality and specifications.
- Stock, inventory and order food and supplies to maintain adequate inventory levels.
- Manage assigned site operations, ensuring safe and efficient food services in compliance with nutritional menu and health standards.
- Supervise, train and evaluate N&W Substitutes in food preparation, serving and cleaning.
- Attend department meetings, in-service trainings and workshops to share and gather necessary information.
- Reconcile transactions (e.g., meal counts, monies collected) to maintain accurate account balances.
- Maintain manual and electronic files and records (production reports, temperature logs, timesheets) for up-to-date information and historical reference.
- Use web-based programs and software related to the N&W Department to support daily operations.
- Respond to inquiries of students, staff and the public regarding food items and service policies.
- Screen free/reduced meal applications to ensure accuracy before submitting to the Nutrition & Wellness Department.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to maintain efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Adhere to safety practices; plan and manage projects; prepare and maintain accurate records; operate standard food service equipment; use relevant software applications.
- Perform basic math, including fractions, percentages and ratios; read technical information; compose documents; facilitate group discussions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; understand safety practices, food preparation and handling, sanitation practices, and quantity cooking methods.
- Schedule activities; gather, collate and classify data; manage equipment; work with diverse groups; set priorities; work as part of a team; handle interruptions; maintain rapport with students, employees and community.
Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; direct others within a small work unit; utilize resources from other units as needed.
Work EnvironmentPhysical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; fine finger dexterity. The job requires approximately 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. It is performed under temperature extremes and exposure to risks of injury and/or illness. Ability to lift 50 pounds is required.
