Job Summary

Paradise Valley Community College is seeking a Laboratory Technician Senior (Physical Sciences) who supports the operations of Physics, Astronomy, Geology, and Engineering laboratories. The Laboratory Technician Senior is responsible for the organization and preparation of complex laboratory equipment and materials for laboratory experiments, primarily in the instructional areas of physical sciences. Additionally, the role requires assisting with providing student instruction and offering direct assistance to students doing their internships, research, and work study.

The Laboratory Technician Senior may collaborate with other science departments as needed.

Essential Functions
  • 40% – Analyzes and prepares individual laboratory programs and determines lab set‑ups; prepares materials and equipment required for lecture and laboratory classes; organizes and delivers equipment and materials used for lecture and lab activities.
  • 30% – Assembles, maintains, and troubleshoots complex lab equipment used for physical science labs and lecture; demonstrates the use of apparatus; learns, tests, installs, and updates software/hardware needed for equipment such as Vernier Science Instruments, spectroscopy, telescopes; develops training aids and instructional materials; contacts vendors for specific equipment information.
  • 15% – Provides work supervision, direction, and/or monitors student workers/interns/ambassadors in usage and cleaning of laboratory equipment and spaces; provides assistance and consultation for instructors regarding laboratory performance; adheres to and ensures compliance with applicable policies and safety procedures.
  • 15% – Establishes and schedules equipment maintenance and inventory records; purchases laboratory materials and consumables; ensures proper chemical and hazardous storage and disposal; performs other duties commensurate with the grade level.
Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of experience providing assistance to students in an instructional setting or preparing, maintaining, and delivering equipment, supplies or related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in the assignment area.

OR an equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full‑time work experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the job.

Desired Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree or higher in a Physical Science field (Physics, Astronomy, Engineering, Geology) or a related field.
  • Evidence of two (2) years or more of direct support experience preparing and maintaining instructional laboratory space, equipment, and resources.
  • Experience with lab safety protocols, including safe handling, storage, and correct disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials.
  • Experience with general science lab procedures and operations, including maintaining, troubleshooting, and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
  • Experience using computer applications for tracking, purchasing, and maintaining inventory for lab supplies.
  • Experience leading and monitoring the work of others; knowledge of coaching and mentoring.
  • Documented experience creating or writing laboratory preparations and protocols.
