Job SummaryProvide security for all areas of the Washington Street Shelter, including all parking lots and common areas, dorms, sleeping areas, and any other areas that staff, volunteers, and residents may frequent.
HoursThe shelter is a 24‑hour, 7‑day‑a‑week operation. Availability at all hours and days is required. If specific hours and days are requested, accommodation will be discussed at the initial meeting and/or offer.
Specific Duties- Perform security duties including patrolling, crowd control, unlocking/locking buildings, arming/disarming alarms, and monitoring the CCTV system.
- File incident reports in a timely manner. Reports may include accessing, reviewing, and providing photographs and/or video from the surveillance system to local authorities and SVdP departments.
- Perform essential operational duties as needed when volunteers are not present, such as trash removal, sweeping, mopping, serving, and stacking tables or chairs.
- Respond to emergency incidents, provide support, and take the lead in life‑saving measures such as CPR, AED, First‑Aid, and/or Naloxone or epinephrine injections.
- Observe staff, volunteers, and guests to ensure everyone displays a pass or company badge while on property and follows SVdP health and safety guidelines.
- Monitor employees, volunteers, and client volunteers in their assigned areas or departments. Investigate any suspicious behavior by individuals on or near the property.
- Perform searches on residents and their belongings upon return to the property and before granting admission to a building.
- Demonstrate and promote ownership and a sense of community among residents and coworkers.
- Conduct periodic dorm checks, ensuring dorms and sleeping areas are kept clean and free of trash and debris.
- Professionally handle disputes on property and take appropriate action, including removal of individuals or initiating contact with emergency response agencies. Demonstrate de‑scalation techniques and address post‑incident occurrences.
- Display professional behavior in all situations. Maintain good working relationships with staff, volunteers, and clients. Assist department managers, supervisors, or assistant supervisors with personnel, volunteer, or guest conflicts.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Security Manager or Supervisor.
- Participate as a model for SVdP’s Culture of Philanthropy, ensuring volunteers feel welcomed and appreciated.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- 1+ year’s experience in security or a related customer‑service position.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, and lift 30 pounds.
- Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate orally and in writing in English.
Skills and Qualifications
- Level One Fingerprint Clearance card or ability to obtain one within first 90 days (required for IHC).
- Bilingual: ability to speak and translate in English and Spanish.
- Familiarity with email and instant messaging to communicate with team.
- Familiarity with CCTV surveillance systems.
- Experience in writing and documenting incident reports.
- CPR, First Aid, and CPI (de‑scalation) certifications.
