Job Summary
Under general direction, the incumbent will be responsible for the completion of work requests regarding the grounds/craft of the entire District including maintaining chain-link fencing, playground and recreational areas, concrete and structural areas, and flood irrigation systems. The incumbent will use his or her knowledge to solve problems and complete repairs with minimal impact to site, staff, and students.
Essential Functions- Performs cleanup at the end of the day or when the job is completed to ensure the area is safe, including cleaning spills, picking up tools, cleaning the area where the job was completed, and performing touch‑up work as needed. Operates the power sweeper to clean parking lots, driveways, basketball and volleyball courts and removes construction debris and trash materials with heavy equipment.
- Completes maintenance work requests by reviewing work orders, determining the number of hours used to complete the job, identifying tools, equipment, chemicals, and safety precautions, and documenting the results after the project is completed.
- Maintains chain‑link fencing for the District by installing, removing, and repairing chain‑link fencing, laying out new fence lines, setting posts, and installing new fabric.
- Maintains concrete installations by installing, removing, and repairing sidewalks and driveways. Applies asphalt cold patch to mend structures, pad berms, create speed bumps, repair sidewalks, handicapped ramps, and parking lots with asphalt cold patch. Repairs block construction, planter boxes, and walls at District sites.
- Maintains flood irrigation systems by installing, removing, and repairing concrete aprons, lawn grates, flood control gates, concrete tile risers, irrigation trenches, and main underground waterway systems.
- Performs preventive maintenance on tools, equipment, and chemicals used for the grounds/craft of the District, including cleaning and storing them properly.
- Maintains playgrounds by mowing, grading, leveling, discing, reseeding, and fertilizing school fields with tractors, mowers, and power attachments. Plants, prunes, and removes trees at the District sites.
- Maintains school recreational areas by constructing and preserving sand and long‑jump pits with backhoe tractors and hand tools, and installing, removing, and repairing playground equipment.
- Attends meetings and seminars to stay current on federal and state requirements and maintains valid state licenses, permits, and certifications in relation to the grounds/craft position.
- Performs other duties as required.
- High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (G.E.D.) and three years of maintenance grounds/craft related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Must possess a valid Arizona Driver’s License and a valid Arizona Commercial Driver’s License within 90 days of hire.
- Knowledge of the codes, laws, and regulations governing grounds/craft.
- Knowledge of safety precautions.
- Operating equipment used in performing grounds/craft work.
- Reading and understanding technical manuals.
- Reading and understanding chemical labels and material safety data sheets (MSDS).
- Knowledge of environmental issues.
- Understanding harmful effects and emergency response.
- Knowledge of proper personal protective equipment.
- Knowledge of proper mixing, loading, and application; understanding transportation, storage, disposal, and spill cleanup of chemicals and wastes.
- Effective communication skills while interacting with supervisors, staff, students, and others.
The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
