Job Summary:

This position is involved in the daily repairs of plumbing, electrical, lighting, gas, water, and HVAC systems within ASPC-Phoenix.

Job Duties:
  • Plans maintenance related projects and oversees completion
  • Resolves issues and answers questions related to work methods /processes
  • Schedules and supervises repair tasks, including preventative and general maintenance
  • Completes related documentation
  • Inspects and maintains tools and equipment to ensure proper working order
  • Conducts inspections
  • Supervises and evaluates inmate workers performance
  • Drives on State business
  • Performs other duties appropriate to the assignment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Building and utility service systems including blueprints, safety practices and codes
  • Methods and practices involved in remodeling and construction
  • Trades, e.g., electrical, electronic, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, general facility maintenance and preventive maintenance
  • Budgeting to include estimating costs and ordering materials
  • Common and specialized tools and equipment for performing duties
  • OSHA & Department of Environmental Quality safety guidelines
  • Local and national building codes

Skill in:

  • Written and verbal communication
  • Building and maintaining interpersonal relationships
  • Basic reading of blueprints and schematics
  • Estimating , costing, and ordering materials
  • Applying and demonstrating leadership

Ability to:

  • Work in a prison environment
  • Learn and adhere to Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation & Reentry policies and procedures
Selective Preference(s):
  • On the job training as a technical or generalized maintenance staff person
  • Technical education
  • Specialized trade schools and unions
Pre-Employment Requirements:

Employment is contingent on the selected applicant passing a background investigation, drug test and a medical/physical examination.

If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job, then the following requirements apply. Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current, valid class-appropriate driver’s license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver’s license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and neither revoked nor suspended.

Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R).

In an effort to maintain a safe environment, all employees are required to take a Tuberculosis (TB) test during their New Employee Orientation and every year thereafter.

All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).
