Job Duties:This Refrigeration Mechanic (HVAC) will work under the direction of the Physical Plant Supervisor and will be responsible for repairs and maintenance of all HVAC equipment, including the repair, removal, replacement, and installation of chiller units, ice machines, A/C units, walk‑in freezers, compressors, reversing valves, dryer filters, thermostats, evaporative coils, blowers, fans, belts, and pulleys and changing air filters on a quarterly basis.
The job functions of a Refrigeration Mechanic (HVAC) include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inspect and evaluate maintenance, repairs and construction projects
- Troubleshoot different types of HVAC and related component equipment
- Complete daily work orders
- Order supplies or tools as needed
- Conduct periodic standard inspections and preventive maintenance on facility structures, tools, and equipment
- Review and apply preventive maintenance programs for heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
- Develop and/or modify new procedures for preventive maintenance programs
- Diagnose problems and malfunctions in cooling, heating, ventilation controls, devices, and systems
- Perform other duties appropriate to the assignment
Knowledge of:
- Methods, practices, and theory of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems
- Freon installation, recovery, recycle, and recharge in HVAC systems
- Diagnosing heating, cooling, and ventilation malfunctions
- Safety practices pertaining to the maintenance work environment
- Use of multi‑meters to troubleshoot circuits, relays, continuity, logic controls, gas safety valves, and motor controls, 24V to 480V
- Single‑phase and three‑phase systems
- Types and uses of various refrigerants
- Safe pressure levels
- Safe refrigerator and freezer temperatures and HVAC codes
- National and local building codes and common safety practices
- Common and specialized meters, tools, and equipment related to HVAC
Skill in:
- Strong electrical and problem‑solving skills
- Written and verbal communication
- Inspecting, servicing, repairing, and installing a wide variety of cooling/refrigeration equipment, including large‑scale commercial systems, by using various test devices and applying logic gained through experience to determine problem areas
- Applying and understanding national and local building codes and common safety practices in the trade
- Estimate, cost, and order supplies, materials, and equipment
- Working as part of a team
Ability to:
- Learn basic internal computerized systems and maintain electronic records keeping
- Multi‑task a variety of assigned tasks
- Practice safety and security procedures
- Follow policies and procedures established for the work systems
- Apply statutes, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to maintenance of a physical plant
- Identify, assess, and resolve malfunctions related to heating, cooling, ventilation
