Duties and basic tasks include performing the inspection, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems). Employees must participate in a 24‑hour call‑back program and respond to duty post within 30 minutes. The position requires working at elevated heights in stressful situations and may require overtime during hazardous weather conditions.
Job DutiesSignal/Lighting/Electrical Technician 1 (SLATE
1):
Broad scope of basic level electrical, electronic, and mechanical tasks related to inspection, installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, roadway lighting, and ITS. Operates motorized vehicles and equipment, performs contract management, quality assurance, record‑keeping, and emergency repairs.
Signal/Lighting/Electrical Technician 2 (SLATE2):
Similar responsibilities at an intermediate level with additional emphasis on coordination and emergency repairs.
Signal/Lighting/Electrical Technician 3 (SLATE3):
Advanced level duties including advisory and supervisory responsibilities, scheduling, approvals, and technical evaluation of other technicians.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs)Knowledge of:
- Use, care and maintenance of tools, equipment, and materials related to the trade.
- Plans, sketches, and schematics of electrical, electronic, mechanical, and utility systems.
- National and local electrical codes.
- Methods and procedures for installing, repairing, diagnosing, and inspecting traffic signals, lighting, ITS, and utility systems.
- Electrical, electronic, mechanical, ventilation, and public utility theory.
- Applying federal, state, and agency laws, regulations, and policies.
- Electrical wiring and repair.
- Proper use of materials, tools, vehicles, and equipment.
- Oral and written communications.
- Problem solving and interpersonal relationships.
- Reading and understanding blueprints and schematics.
- Electronic component and circuit installation and repair.
- Applying electrical and electronic principles.

- Learn computer systems, traffic control methods, and procedures.

- SLATE 1:
High school diploma/GED; entry level electrical/electronics background;
Class A CDL attainable. - SLATE 2:
High school diploma/GED; foreman level electrical/electronics background; one year of experience equivalent to SLATE 1. - SLATE 3:
High school diploma/GED; foreman level electrical/electronics background; one year of experience equivalent to SLATE 2.
- Valid State‑issued driver's license with current, unexpired, non‑revoked, and non‑suspended status.
- For systems positions:
Valid CDL permit at appointment and Arizona Class A CDL within 6 months. - For SLATE 2:
Level I IMSA Training/Certifications. - For SLATE 3:
Level II IMSA Training/Certifications. - All newly hired State employees must complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E‑Verify).
