HVAC Controls Technician
The HVAC Controls Technician serves as a field representative, providing front-line technical and repair support for HVAC control systems while delivering courteous and professional service. This role focuses on troubleshooting, installing, starting up, and commissioning building automation and HVAC control systems, including mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage components. The technician works closely with the operations team to meet customer needs efficiently, mentors other technicians, and ensures projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a professional field representative, demonstrating courtesy and professionalism in all customer and team interactions.
- Provide front-line technical and repair support for HVAC control systems through clear and effective communication with internal teams and customers.
- Collaborate with the operations team to ensure customer needs are met promptly and efficiently.
- Respond to internal and external customer requests in a timely and professional manner.
- Perform troubleshooting, installation, start-up, and commissioning of HVAC control systems, including mechanical, electrical, and low-voltage components.
- Execute project field work independently, ensuring high-quality workmanship and adherence to budgeted timelines.
- Conduct point-to-point testing to verify low-voltage controls and electrical connections.
- Verify sequences of operation (SOO) by testing newly installed HVAC equipment and systems to ensure they operate correctly and meet performance requirements.
- Review mechanical plans and control submittals to identify potential issues with control devices, wiring, or sequences of operation before and during installation.
- Modify, troubleshoot, and optimize control programming as needed to ensure proper system functionality.
- Commission and fine-tune building automation and control systems, including airflow and hydronic systems.
- Mentor and support other technicians in all aspects of project execution, including troubleshooting, commissioning, and documentation.
- Conduct customer training sessions for completed projects to ensure end users understand system operation and basic troubleshooting.
- Document changes for as-built records and ensure all modifications are accurately reflected in project documentation.
- Support accurate project billing by documenting labor, materials, and changes in a timely and organized manner.
- Participate in company training programs and pursue self-directed learning to maintain and expand technical expertise.
- Follow all safety standards and complete required safety training, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Keep leadership informed of job progress, potential issues, and any conditions that may impact schedule, budget, or performance.
- Proactively manage processes and procedures, including email, collaboration tools, project folders, labor logs, and expense submissions.
- Work with various building automation platforms and control technologies to support commissioning, troubleshooting, and system optimization.
Essential Skills
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing sequence of operation verification (SOO), including testing newly installed HVAC equipment and systems to ensure they operate correctly and meet performance requirements.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience performing point-to-point testing to verify electrical connections and low-voltage control wiring.
- Hands-on experience installing, commissioning, troubleshooting, repairing, and programming building automation control systems.
- Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, control devices, and building automation concepts.
- Proficiency with direct digital controls (DDC) and building control technologies.
- Experience with mechanical and electrical troubleshooting related to HVAC controls and building automation systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and verify airflow and hydronic systems within HVAC applications.
- Familiarity with IT networking concepts as they relate to building automation and control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical plans, control drawings, and submittals.
- Skill in modifying and troubleshooting control programming for HVAC systems and building automation platforms.
- Competence with Windows applications, primarily Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record that permits operation of a company vehicle.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers, colleagues, and leadership.
- Ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Commitment to following safety standards and using personal protective equipment as required.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with building automation software and HVAC control platforms.
- Familiarity with Siemens, Honeywell, Trane, and similar building automation and control systems.
