Position: Maintenance Technician- The Retreat

Maintenance technician roles at stabilized apartment communities tend to look similar on paper. What differentiates them in practice is the property size, the ownership culture, and whether the company actually invests in its people. At MG Properties, a regional operator with over 30 years of acquisitions, development, and management across the Western U.S., this position at The Retreat in Phoenix sits inside a company that ties employee growth to its broader mission.

What

You’ll Actually Do

This is a full-scope technician role at a 200-plus unit community. Your day will move between service request completions, grounds and common area upkeep, appliance repairs, and painting. When a unit turns, you’re part of the make‑ready process, working through punch lists to get apartments rent‑ready on schedule. You’ll also carry on‑call rotation responsibilities, which means after‑hours calls are part of the job.

That’s worth naming clearly: if emergency availability is a deal breaker, this role isn’t the right fit. If you’ve handled it before and you’re comfortable with the cadence, it’s manageable and compensated.

Trade coverage here is broad. Plumbing, electrical, HVAC, general repairs. The expectation is that you can move across all of them without needing to hand off basic work to outside vendors. At least two years of apartment maintenance experience, specifically at a property of meaningful scale, is the baseline they’re looking for.

What You Bring
  • Two or more years of hands‑on apartment maintenance experience, ideally at a 200‑unit community or larger
  • Working knowledge across plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems
  • Comfort with the full turn process, from initial walk to final punch list
  • A customer service orientation that holds up under pressure from residents
  • Reliable transportation and the flexibility to participate in on‑call rotation
  • Ability to work within a team while also managing solo tasks independently
Where This Role Can Take You

Technician experience at a property this size builds a skill set that compounds quickly. Technicians who develop strong diagnostic instincts across trades, keep their service request close rates high, and communicate well with property management staff tend to move into lead technician or maintenance supervisor roles within a few years. From there, the path toward service manager or facilities director opens up, particularly within a company that promotes internally.

MG Properties' profit‑sharing structure and 401k match also signal that they’re thinking about retention, which generally means they’re more likely to develop people they’ve already hired.

Phoenix’s apartment market has seen significant construction activity in recent years, which means properties are competing harder on maintenance quality and resident experience. Fast, competent service requests directly affect renewal rates and online reputation. A technician who understands that connection, and works accordingly, tends to get noticed.
