Job Purpose

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing the Automated People Mover (APM) system and its associated subsystems at the O&M site. This includes vehicles serving the PHX Sky Train system and wayside subsystems such as guideway rail, switches, platform doors, and related components.

This role performs preventive, corrective, and recovery maintenance activities following established procedures and under normal supervision. Technicians exercise sound judgment and a high degree of autonomy when troubleshooting equipment failures and recommending repairs, while following direction from senior-level personnel as required.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
1. Operate, Troubleshoot, and Repair Systems (25%)
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on APM vehicles, wayside equipment, and associated subsystems.
  • First and Second Shift: Primary focus on vehicle maintenance and related equipment.
  • Third Shift: Primary focus on wayside systems and infrastructure.
  • All technicians must be capable of maintaining both vehicle and wayside subsystems.
  • Operate trains, platform doors, guideway switches, and power distribution systems in manual mode.
  • Inspect and service electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems in accordance with established procedures.
  • Repair or replace defective components using manuals, blueprints, schematics, drawings, and verbal or written instructions.
2. System Recovery and Customer Support (25%)
  • Respond promptly to system failures and assist in the recovery of disabled vehicles to restore operations.
  • Support customer requests efficiently and professionally.
  • Assist passengers during emergency and service disruption events.
3. Preventive Maintenance Execution (20%)
  • Perform thorough and complete preventive maintenance inspections on vehicles, wayside systems, and subsystems as assigned.
4. Certification and Qualification Maintenance (20%)
  • Achieve and maintain all functional certifications required for assigned systems and responsibilities.
5. Training and Continuous Development (10%)
  • Actively participate in ongoing training programs.
  • Demonstrate continuous learning and progression through the maintenance training program.

Local Requirements
  • Ability to work a 24/7/365 schedule
    , including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must pass required federal background checks and drug screening
    .
  • Ability to work at elevated heights, climb ladders, squat, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • For safety reasons, must communicate effectively in spoken and written English
    .
Qualifications & Functional Knowledge Education and Training
  • Formal training or education in an electromechanical field required.
  • Technical school, engineering coursework, or equivalent training preferred.
  • Relevant work experience may substitute for formal education.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
    Associate degree (A.S.) in a related mechanical or technical discipline preferred.
  • Vocational training or technical certification is a plus.
Industry Knowledge
  • Experience in railroad, Automated People Mover, or transportation systems preferred.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Basic electronic theory
    • Mechanical systems and equipment operation
    • Hand and power tools
    • Basic electronic testing equipment
Technical & Professional Skills
  • Demonstrated initiative in prior technical assignments.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities, with examples required.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of technical tasks.
  • Capacity to learn and safely operate complex equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow technical instructions and procedures.
  • Willingness to work rotating shifts as required.
