Job Summary:

The Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) is seeking a Chaplain II to provide spiritual care, religious programming, and pastoral counseling to juveniles at Adobe Mountain School. This role supports the holistic development and rehabilitation of youth by addressing their spiritual and religious needs while coordinating interfaith religious services and resources. The Chaplain works collaboratively with facility staff, volunteers, and community religious leaders to create a supportive spiritual environment that respects diverse faith traditions.

They also provide crisis and counseling services to youth.

Job Duties:
  • Religious Programming and

    Activities:

    Supervise and monitor all religious activities within the facility. Arrange, coordinate, and facilitate worship services for multiple faith traditions. Recruit, train, and supervise religious volunteers, contractors, and visiting clergy. Maintain religious materials, resources, and supplies for all faith traditions.
  • Counseling and Crisis Intervention:
    Provide individual pastoral counseling and crisis intervention services to juveniles. Conduct hospital and home visitations when needed. Work closely with staff in other secure program areas.
  • Interfaith Coordination and Staff

    Collaboration:

    Consult and work with staff in all program areas to coordinate worship services and provide resources for all faiths. Educate staff on religious accommodations and cultural sensitivity. Maintain relationships with community religious organizations.
  • Professional Development and Committee Participation:
    Participate in ongoing education programs related to juvenile justice and chaplaincy. Attend Religious Advisory Council meetings and denominational clergy meetings. Engage in study and professional enrichment programs.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of diverse religious traditions, practices, and spiritual needs; knowledge of adolescent development, trauma, and behavioral health issues; understanding of security protocols and procedures in secure care environments; knowledge of crisis intervention principles and trauma-informed care.
  • Skills: Strong crisis intervention and counseling skills; excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal; proficiency in conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques; strong organizational and program coordination skills; computer skills including email, Google Docs, and record-keeping systems; training, supervision, and volunteer coordination skills.
  • Abilities: Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries; cultural competency and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and belief systems; ability to work effectively in a secure care environment and follow safety protocols; ability to respond quickly to emergency situations; ability to build rapport with adolescents in a correctional setting.
Selective Preference(s):

Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent graduate degree;
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) units;
Board certification through a professional chaplaincy organization (Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains).

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in theology, religious studies, divinity, or related field; a minimum of two years of full-time experience conducting religious services, which include pastoral care, counseling, and teaching. Ordained, licensed, or commissioned by a recognized faith community or denomination.
