Summary

The School Social Worker provides supportive services to students and their families in overcoming barriers to learning; to promote positive working relationships among and between staff and the schools by fostering a climate conducive to open communication and productive work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Counsels students and parents individually and in groups on topics such as problem solving skills, parenting skills, abuse of drugs and alcohol, family violence, and other such topics.
  • Communicates with teachers and other staff about students’ life situations and home/neighborhood circumstances.
  • Acts as a liaison for families to interpret their concerns to school personnel and maintains open lines of communication.
  • Provides information to facilitate the family’s use of community resources for meeting housing, clothing, nutritional, and health needs.
  • Provides short-term crisis intervention to students, staff, and families.
  • Serves as a liaison to community agencies.
  • Assists with the coordination of activities and programs for homeless children.
  • Assists families in understanding their children’s educational needs and the resources available within the school.
  • Interviews parents and others to obtain social history, developmental history, and other background information concerning the needs of students.
  • Helps students overcome barriers to school attendance and achievement, and promotes responsible behavior.
  • Participates in staff conferences related to the student’s behavior adjustment and academic progress.
  • Assists students and their families to explore alternative educational programs and career options.
  • Fosters collaborative educational efforts among staff by supporting the district’s vision, mission and goals and its commitment to shared decision making.
  • Performs such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.
Required Qualifications
  • Masters Degree in social work related field
  • State certified/licensed
  • Experience working with children
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual preferred
Evaluation

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provision of the Board policy or evaluation of professional personnel.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several concrete variables.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs; ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematics such as probability and statistical inference; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Physical Demands

The employee is required to talk and hear, frequently stand, walk, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, or control; reach with hands and arms; occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
