Purpose StatementThe job of Assistant Coach is designed to create and implement program activities in accordance with applicable rules and regulations related to the sport; provide supervision of student athletes during all aspects of participation; use sound instructional techniques; serve as a positive role model; and support a positive environment for students, the community, and various organizations. Individuals in this classification are assigned to a specific sport at the Varsity, JV/Frosh, or Junior High level.
This job reports to the Athletic Director.
Essential Functions- Assesses student athletes to provide feedback on individual performance and/or determine team placement.
- Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., to receive and convey information related to the role.
- Communicates with parents, students, officials, administrators, and the community to provide information, assistance, and direction.
- Instructs student athletes to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Maintains records (e.g., game/student statistics, insurance, signed permission forms, emergency information, schedules, equipment inventories) to comply with district, athletic conference, and state requirements.
- Manages uniforms, equipment, and school facilities to maintain items responsibly and safely.
- Monitors student athletes' academic eligibility to comply with AIA requirements and provide intervention (e.g., counseling, tutoring) to students needing assistance.
- Supervises student athletes during all areas of participation to ensure activities are conducted safely and with minimal risk of injury.
- Teaches sports techniques, rules, strategies, and tactics to prepare the team and individual athletes for competition.
Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job RequirementsSkills: Adapt to changing work priorities; administer first aid; apply relevant laws, codes, policies, and regulations; organize and communicate information and concepts. Knowledge of equipment used in the activity/program; injury prevention and treatment protocols; participant eligibility guidelines, attendance and discipline guidelines; public relations protocols; relevant professional standards; safety practices and procedures.
Knowledge: Perform basic math (fractions, percents, ratios); review and interpret highly technical information; write technical materials; speak persuasively to implement desired actions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
Abilities: Schedule activities, meetings, and events; gather and collate data; consider a wide variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work independently with others in various circumstances; work with data using defined processes; operate equipment using defined methods. Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines; model sportsmanship; motivate athletes; enforce discipline;
set priorities; work extended hours including evenings and weekends. Problem solving to analyze issues and create action plans.
Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; direct other persons within a small work unit; utilize resources from other units as required. Continuously impact the organization’s services.
Work EnvironmentPhysical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and fine finger dexterity. Approximately 20% sitting, 40% walking, 40% standing. Work may involve temperature extremes and exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
ExperienceJob related experience is required.
EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent.
