ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture champions, promotes, and supports the City's arts and culture community to make Phoenix a great place to live, work, and visit. The department manages an award-winning public art program; grants funds to artists and nonprofit arts organizations; oversees a dozen cultural facilities; professional development opportunities for arts administrators and individual artists; and participates in national studies and research that make a strong case for the arts and demonstrate their economic, social, practical, and educational benefits.

The Office of Arts and Culture is seeking a full-time temporary Museum Assistant to work on a Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) project at S'edav Va'aki Museum. This position is funded by a NAGPRA grant. In this role you will be responsible for a NAGPRA project that involves archival research, object inventory, object rehousing, data entry, producing NAGPRA summaries, and attending consultation with Native American Tribes.

You will be expected to understand and work with documentation and artifacts from archaeological excavations which will include materials from sensitive archaeological contexts.

The incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment in the completion of assigned tasks and performance is evaluated based on results achieved. Supervision is received from the Museum Curator.

The temporary position that will be funded through September 2027 with a possibility to be made regular in a future budget cycle. The temporary position will have benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially into the city's retirement program. If the successful candidate is a current City employee, all benefits will still be applicable, and the employee will still contribute to their pension.

Temporary positions are not covered under civil service rules, and thus employment is considered "at-will", and employees may be separated at any time.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

* Knowledge of NAGPRA regulations and experience working on NAGPRA projects.

* Excels at detail oriented tasks with the ability to work efficiently to meet deadlines.

* Work well as part of a team and be able to communicate and work in a respectful manner.

* Ability to physically handle objects from sensitive archaeological contexts, including funerary objects.

SALARY

This position is grant funded with a pre-determined salary of $32.46 per hour.

Please understand that this is pay grade 051. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

* Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.

* Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.

* Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

* Three years of professional museum or public art collection experience.

* Including one year in an area of specialization such as Collections Management, Educational Programming, Registrar, or exhibit design and implementation.

* Bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, education, fine arts, or fields related to specific assignments.

* Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
