Job Description

Transportation Dispatcher

Location: Transportation Dept.

Employment Type: Non-Interim, 12 months, 8 hours/day

Grade & Salary: 28, $23.66/hr

Start Date: 08/20/2026

Purpose Statement: Provide support to the educational process by coordinating and assigning drivers to regularly scheduled routes, special excursions, and field trips; processing routine and emergency requests; maintaining department records; and coordinating assigned projects.

Essential Functions
  • Assist in the planning of bus routes and schedules to ensure all routes are covered.
  • Collaborate with contracted charter buses for additional transportation needs (e.g., field trips, athletic events). Determine driver and equipment requirements to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Coordinate buses and drivers for extracurricular activities (field trips, athletic events) to ensure transportation availability.
  • Dispatch drivers to meet schedule demands.
  • Inform school personnel and parents of practices, regulations, and procedures to ensure proper follow‑up action.
  • Maintain a variety of manual and electronic documents, files, and records to document activities, provide reliable information, and comply with administrative requirements.
  • Operate a two‑way radio in accordance with FCC regulations to gather and convey information.
  • Participate in unit meetings, in‑service training, workshops, etc., as required to convey or gather information needed for job functions.
  • Perform transportation driver duties as needed to meet student transportation requirements.
  • Process various materials (field‑trip requests, route changes) to update and distribute information, authorize action, and comply with mandates.
  • Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and staff to provide the necessary information, directions, and resolution.
  • Respond to injuries or accidents to comply with established policies and regulatory guidelines.
  • Schedule work assignments for bus drivers and aides to ensure completion of routes safely, timely, and in accordance with guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to maintain efficient functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Operate two‑way radios and county emergency radio.
  • Operate standard office equipment and pertinent software applications.
  • Perform standard clerical procedures, including preparing and maintaining accurate records.
  • Basic math skills (fractions, percents, ratios).
  • Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
  • Apply department policies & procedures, office practices, grammar, punctuation, first aid and CPR.
  • Schedule activities, meetings, events; gather, collate, and classify data.
  • Work independently with others in diverse circumstances; use equipment per standardized methods.
  • Problem‑solve by analyzing issues and creating action plans.
Responsibilities

Work under limited supervision following standardized practices; lead, guide, and coordinate others as required. Impact organization services as an opportunity.

Work Environment

Physical demands include occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and fine finger dexterity. Approximately 75% sitting, 15% walking, 10% standing. Clean, healthy environment.

Experience

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.
