STUDENT SUPPORT ASSISTANT

SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Building Principal, this position manages supports positive student behavior, restorative practices, and directs student activities therein. The Student Support Assistant serves in cooperation with the building administration in promoting high standards for student achievement and behavior.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree
  • Experience in public schools and/or working with students
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supervise the students who are temporarily removed from the classroom, and provide supporting positive behavior, incorproating restorative practices and coordinating activities of students therein, arranging for daily lunches for students, notification to staff of students in ISS and collecting assignments for those students.
  • Maintain classroom environment conducive to effective learning
  • Assist students with the performance of daily assigned tasks.
  • Communicate regularly with school administrators including reporting of incidents and concerns regarding ISS room and suggestions for improving ISS program,
  • Maintains records relative to students assigned to the ISS classroom and submits monthly reports to the administration.
  • Reviews School Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS) with students and establishes high expectations for students.
  • Provide support for teachers and staff concerning student behavioral issues.
  • Supervise student testing in the ISS classroom, as authorized by the regular classroom teacher(s).
  • Ensure that students remain constructively occupied with schoolwork throughout the day.
  • Maintain positive communication with parents
  • Other tasks assigned by the Building Principal.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Full Time, 184 days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 7:30 am – 3:30 pm, inclusive of a 30 minute unpaid lunch break. This schedule may be adjusted at the discretion of Building Principal, per the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

EVALUATION:

The manner in which the Student Support Assistant performs his/her duties will be evaluated by the Building Principal.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Inside (95%). Some outside work in all weather conditions may be required to complete assigned duties and/or during emergency drills. Most of this role is performed on one’s feet, and the position allows for minimal time sitting or resting. Physical restraint of students may be necessary when appropriate. At times, running may be required for the safety of students.

Works in standard office and school building environments.

Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Command of the English language necessary. Ability to communicate in-person, over the phone and via electronic means required. Ability to communicate complex ideas, and respond to stakeholders who are upset or frustrated necessary.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions is necessary. Understanding of time and scheduling required.
