To establish and maintain a substitute pool. This position provides coverage at school sites district-wide. On call as needed Monday through Friday. Working hours may vary between 4 hours to 7 hours a day, with an average of 5.5 hours a day. May include bus riding.
DefinitionUnder general supervision, to assist teachers of the learning handicapped by performing a wide variety of duties in the program involving immediate contact and supervision of students; and to do related work as required.
Class CharacteristicsPositions in this class are established to assist teachers in the education, training, and supervision of learning handicapped students. Incumbents perform a variety of duties both in and out of the classroom and play a major role in assisting the teacher in caring for the physical needs of the students. They must be prepared to administer emergency treatment in the event of seizures and the like;
take temperatures and give medicines as ordered by physicians. In addition, they perform all the standard aide functions of assisting with academic related and routine clerical duties.
- Assists students during passage from the classroom to other rooms and the playground; helps students in personal grooming; supervises toilet area; takes temperatures; provides medicines periodically as ordered; must be prepared for a variety of medical emergencies.
- Assists students in achieving coordination in physical education activities; helps students learn cooperation and socialization; assists in the supervision of safety practices connected with games and play equipment; helps small groups of students in the use of crayons, pencils, scissors, puzzles, and with general clean up.
- Assists students in small groups with academic work and in helping individuals with their lessons; assists in the preparation of teaching aids and devices; helps prepare room for activities; confers with the teacher in planning and counseling relative to problems being experienced by individual students.
- Assists students with lunch by obtaining food, serving and feeding, and cleaning up; attends and participates in meetings as required.
Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate (must possess or acquire within six months.)
Minimum Qualifications- Knowledge of physical problems and general needs relative to learning handicapped students; indoor and outdoor recreational activities suitable for handicapped students; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; operation of standard office equipment; and first aid techniques and practices.
- Ability to work effectively with a group of handicapped students in varying activities; learn pertinent procedures and functions quickly and apply them without immediate supervision; maintain a sympathetic understanding of the problems of handicapped students; understand and follow oral and written directions; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students and adults; spell correctly, use good English, and make simple arithmetic computations;
perform general clerical tasks and learn the operation of office equipment and devices; and speak, read, and write Spanish is highly desirable.
One year of experience in working with children.
EducationPersons with the experience, knowledge, and abilities as stated are considered to have the necessary education.
Requirements / Qualifications- One year of experience in working with children.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- Proof of HS Graduation (High School Diploma or equivalent).
