INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE/SEVERELY HANDICAPPED DEFINITION The Special Education Aide works under the supervision and direction of the instructor, the primary function of the aide is to assist the teachers of severely handicapped students by performing a wide variety of duties in the program involving immediate contact and supervision of students; and to do related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class are established to assist teachers in the education, training, and supervision of severely handicapped students.

Following proper training, incumbents perform a variety of duties both in and out of the classroom and play a major role in assisting the teacher in caring for the physical needs of the students. Supervision of the students is unceasing during the day. They must be aware of and assist with the physical requirements of each handicapped student. They must work with hydraulic lifts, catheters, urinals, and colostomy bags, tracheotomy suction apparatus, oxygen equipment and related medical care items.

They must relieve circulation problems of quadriplegics regularly; be prepared to administer emergency treatment in the event of seizures and the like; take temperatures and give medicines as ordered by physicians. In addition, they perform all the standard aide functions of assisting with academic related and routine clerical duties. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Assists students during passage from the classroom to other rooms and the playground;

helps students in personal grooming including occasionally bathing and/or shampooing; supervises toilet area; assists students in toileting and cleaning students after toilet accidents; uses hydraulic lifts, gurneys, catheters, urinal and colostomy bags to provide toileting assistance to some students; for students with tracheotomies, suctions mucus collected in the throat to prevent choking; assists quadriplegics every hour or two with methods of relieving pressure and circulation problems;

takes temperatures; provides medicines periodically as ordered; must be prepared for a variety of medical emergencies; prepares solutions and sanitizes seats, basins, handrails, urinals, bedpans, etc.; changes beds and prepares laundry to send out; assists students on and off vehicles; assists students in achieving coordination in physical education activities; helps students learn cooperation and socialization; assists in the supervision of safety practices connected with games and play equipment;

helps small groups of students in the use of crayons, pencils, scissors, puzzles, and with general clean up; assists students in small groups with academic work and in helping individuals with their lessons; assists in the preparation of teaching aids and devices; helps prepare room for activities; confers with the teacher in planning and counseling relative to problems being experienced by individual students;

assists students with lunch by obtaining food, serving and feeding, and cleaning up; attends and participates in meetings as required. CERTIFICATE REQUIRED Standard Red Cross First Aid Certificate;
Hepatitis B vaccination. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:
Physical problems and general needs relative to physically handicapped students; indoor and outdoor recreational activities suitable for handicapped students; correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; operation of standard office equipment; first aid techniques and practices;
