About Our Opportunity

Under the supervision of the Sportfish Development Officer, the Sportfish Outreach Assistant will be based in the Pictou office of the Nova Scotia Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

Primary Accountabilities

This Sportfish Outreach Assistant will help with the designing, planning, evaluating, and delivering of educational programs to grow Nova Scotia's sportfishing industry across the province. Responsibilities include the care and management of program fishing equipment, including maintaining equipment, conducting regular inspections, and keeping an accurate inventory of supplies.

The student will also assist in developing strategic partnerships with industry associations, Tourism Nova Scotia, municipal tourism, and other government departments to provide effective, quality sportfishing marketing programs to residents and visitors to Nova Scotia.

The student will also assist in advancing work to identify, develop, and update accessible fishing locations across Nova Scotia. The Student Assistant will gain valuable experience working with community groups and communicating with the public and other government departments.

Qualifications and Experience

You must be enrolled as a full-time student and returning to school in the fall 2026 or next applicable semester. Preference will be given to students enrolled in either Bachelor of Science, Environmental Science, Education, or a Marketing/Tourism program. Please explain how your education could benefit to the position.

Knowledge of the Nova Scotia recreational fishing industry, marketing, and photography would be considered an asset. Experience working with children is an asset.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: assessment of a written product, interview(s), and references

Working Conditions

Normal work week is 35 hours/week, 7 hours/day. Occasional weekend and weeknights

Additional Information

This opportunity is to fill a summer student position with the anticipated start date of April 27,2026 and end date of August 14, 2027.

This position is based in Pictou, Nova Scotia.

Pay Grade:HOURLY

Salary Range:$16.75- $27.30

The salary rates shown are effective April 1, 2026. Should you start in this position before April 1, 2026, your salary will be based on the current rates until April 1.

The salary rates include an economic adjustment that has been approved. These rates are effective April 1, 2025. Implementation in our HR system will occur on March 5, 2026. Until then, the current rates will apply. Employees hired during this period will receive retroactive pay adjustments in accordance with the applicable policies.
