Schedule Details/Additional Information: Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:30 pm
Major Responsibilities- Provides support to Clinical providers for the provision of direct patient care.
- Assists nurse practitioner or physicians with treatments, diagnostic tests and procedures.
- Prepares and maintains examination and treatment area.
- Assists with changing into a gown if necessary. In addition, helps patient onto the exam table if necessary.
- Prepares patient for examination by explaining their visit/procedure.
- Assists with discharge as directed by the RN or physician.
- Admits patient to examination room, interviews patient as to reason for visit, documents chief complaint in patient medical record.
- Monitors and documents patient vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure), and documents appropriately.
- Notifies nurse practitioner or physicians of findings as appropriate.
- Assists with transport of patients.
- Maintains chart integrity at discharge and ensures chart is ready for return to medical records.
- Sets up equipment and supplies for procedures and diagnostic tests.
- Completes documentation necessary to ensure quality care; maintains practice site quality control logs for CLIA certification.
- Assists nurse practitioner in maintaining the test tracking log; communicates test results per policy and procedure.
- Performs immunizations and other injections as specified at the site.
- Aware of and uses triage protocols; performs mini-registration and scheduling of patients.
- Functions as a liaison between nurse practitioner and other medical ancillary staff; communicates with pharmacies to order new/refill medications and with other physicians or staff to ensure continuity of care.
- Assists in setting up referrals for additional care.
- Promotes patient safety by reporting issues and participating in safety initiatives; maintains a clean and safe work environment.
- Restocks exam rooms; notifies responsible person when supplies need to be ordered; handles soiled linen and distributes clean linen and drapes.
- Assists with disinfection/sterilization of instruments and proper instrument rotation; organizes patient educational materials.
- Maintains patient confidentiality under HIPAA; supports quality improvement through data collection and monitoring of indicators.
- Retrieves medical records as needed; files patient data and ensures records and diagnostic reports are available.
- Pulls from computer results for tests and outside procedures; assists with preparation of referral forms and follow-up with patients.
- Schedules patients, enters charges or messages in the computer system to facilitate efficient response to patient needs; reinforces patient and family teaching.
- Prepares patient medical records for scheduled appointments.
- Provides laboratory phlebotomy and processing services to ensure specimen integrity per site control procedures.
- Obtains blood specimens using standard precautions; performs required tests to assist with diagnosis and treatment; correctly labels specimens and delivers to appropriate laboratory area.
- Documents completion of lab orders/specimens and lab results; determines appropriate processing lab based on insurance guidelines.
- Batches and ships information with specimens for processing; prints lab reports and distributes per policy; notifies clinical staff of significant findings.
- Submits consents and forms required for billing; supports safety initiatives.
- Performs basic clerical support for the office (forms completion, HIPAA-compliant faxing, answering functions, scheduling, mail handling, records maintenance, and chart filing).
- Performs other duties as assigned; may serve as the driver of the Ronald McDonald Van when needed.
- Environmental duties such as cleaning work areas, participating in fire drills, inventory control, offsite supply pickups, and weekend trash removal when needed.
- High School Diploma
- Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant certificate/registered program
- Successful completion of Medical Assistant certificate/registered certification exam
- 2-3 years experience in ambulatory/medical office
- Ability to use computer for printing results and accessing patient information
- Clinically appropriate skills; ability to communicate clearly and effectively with care
- Strong interpersonal and customer relations skills
- Current Med Assistant certification/registration and CPR certification
- Current CDL license or willingness to be trained
- Ability to travel to schools and facilities within the southland area
- Ability to work under stressful conditions and adapt to changes
- Resilient and flexible in a changing environment; may be exposed to hazardous materials
- Cooperate and work with others; capable of making sound and timely decisions
