This is a full‑time position with the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission. For more information on the South Dakota PUC, please visit puc.sd.gov. This position is not remote and requires regular in‑office work in Pierre, South Dakota.

Responsibilities
  • Schedule commission proceedings, meetings, and events.
  • Prepare logistics for certain meetings, including securing and setting up locations and coordinating among participants.
  • Maintain a comprehensive commission calendar.
  • Compile bi‑weekly commission meeting agendas.
  • Coordinate commissioner travel arrangements.
  • Monitor and track legislation.
  • Process telecommunications registrations.
  • Provide administrative support as needed.
  • Handle other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Key Responsibilities for the First 12‑18 Months
  • Coordinate and oversee the comprehensive redevelopment of the PUC website, managing all phases of the project from initial scoping through launch, and working closely with external vendors, the state Bureau of Information and Technology, PUC staff, and other key stakeholders.

Reporting:
This position reports to the commission’s executive director.

Work Hours:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends may be necessary for event support or critical deadlines.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, information systems, communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in administrative operational support (preferred).
Skills
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and follow through to completion.
  • Strong written communication skills with careful attention to grammar, punctuation, syntax, and clarity.
  • Strong verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly and professionally convey information, actively listen, and engage with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism.
Abilities
  • Work independently, take initiative, research options, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Adapt to changing situations, priorities, and workloads.
  • Set, manage, and meet deadlines.
  • Understand, evaluate, and recommend website content management strategies.
  • Work occasional extended hours as needed.
  • Lifting at least 40 pounds to load and unload materials and equipment for meetings and events.
Knowledge of
  • IT infrastructure, tools, and services sufficient to facilitate clear communication among BIT representatives, IT vendors, and PUC staff, and to support the development and management of applications, including PUC websites.
  • Microsoft Office 365, with proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software applications.
Additional Information

Travel and overnights are occasionally required to attend meetings, conferences, and other events.

A valid driver’s license is required.

This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.

This position is eligible for Veterans’ Preference per ARSD 55:10:02:08.
