Communications and Braille Instructor
The Rehabilitation Center for the Blind is seeking a compassionate, creative, and motivated individual to join our team as the Communications and Braille Instructor. In this role, you will work directly with individuals experiencing vision loss, helping them learn new strategies to complete everyday tasks and build confidence in their independence.
Responsibilities- Provide instruction in essential life skills such as communication, personal finance, and daily living activities.
- Teach Braille to individuals who choose to learn it, adapting instruction to meet individual learning styles and goals.
- Tailor instruction to individual needs by breaking tasks into manageable steps and employing creative, effective teaching methods.
- Maintain accurate records of instruction and individual progress.
- Collaborate within an interdisciplinary team and communicate clearly with individuals, families, and staff.
- Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
- Experience teaching independent living or blindness rehabilitation skills.
- Knowledge of braille literacy instruction and adaptive techniques for blindness.
- Strong communication, organizational, and instructional skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Commitment to promoting independence and high expectations for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
- Knowledge of independent living and vocational readiness instruction.
- Blindness rehabilitation principles and techniques.
- Braille reading and writing instruction.
- Low‑vision devices and adaptive equipment.
- Independent living skills training methods.
- Adult learning principles and instructional strategies.
- Record‑keeping and documentation practices.
- Teach blindness rehabilitation and independent living skills effectively.
- Adapt instruction to individual learning styles and needs.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with individuals, families, and staff.
- Assess individual progress and maintain accurate records.
- Use adaptive technology and low‑vision equipment.
- Adapt instructional methods to meet diverse learning needs.
- Establish positive and professional relationships with individuals and staff.
- Encourage individual independence and problem‑solving skills.
- Work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Manage multiple instructional responsibilities effectively.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
- Bachelor's degree in Education, Rehabilitation, Special Education, Human Services, or related field preferred.
- Certification in Braille, Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) certification, or Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT) preferred but not required; willingness to learn Braille is essential.
