Position description:

The south dakota department of transportation pierre area office is looking for eager and capable interns to support our mission to provide "better lives through better transportation." by joining our team, you will become part of that larger purpose to maintain and build our state's roads and bridges for all south dakotans and those who travel through our state. The pierre area office is looking for both engineering students and non-engineering students to help us fulfill this mission.

We have work in a variety of capacities, from asset inventory of items like guardrail and culverts to working on large scale construction projects such as bridge and road reconstruction. We have opportunities for you to work independently and in a team setting. Our goal is to deliver the best possible internship experience for you while helping meet our goals and mission.

Opportunities are available to work closely with our engineering and technician staff to gain real world knowledge and skills. We have flexible scheduling available and opportunities for paid overtime. Interns will also be given safety apparel for use on the job and meal reimbursement when working away from the office. Interns are also encouraged to attend paid events such as the governor's intern picnic and the dot's sponsored intern appreciation day.

Typical work assignments include but are not limited to project administration duties, project inspection activities, testing of materials, surveying, checking materials, and other miscellaneous work such as completing culvert and guardrail inventory. Other duties include assisting office personnel, maintenance, and supervisors on tasks. Assignments will allow you to work in a variety of environments, from the office to the great outdoors.

Qualifications:

Applicant must be enrolled as a part-time/full-time student at a college, university, or technical institute at the time they apply. By the start of the internship, the student should have completed one year (nine months) of their chosen program.

All students are encouraged to apply, but preference may be given to applicants with a standing of junior/senior, south dakota residents, and students of south dakota institutions.
