The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) has a perfect opportunity for you as a Environmental Engineer!
Job Description:
This position is responsible for the SDDOT Stormwater program and collaborating with Environmental staff on the development and completion of the activity's integral to the environmental program. Incumbent will provide technical assistance and insights that contribute to the planning/engineering process and aid in the construction review to ensure conformance of environmental and regulatory standards, particularly storm water requirements.
This position will also manage and facilitate the Erosion and Sediment Control Certification Course, conduct environmental reviews and coordinate project documentation essential to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) project development process, and assuring compliance with NEPA is maintained during construction.
Work activity will predominantly be an office environment with occasions in an outdoor environment; and outdoor work involves working in all weather conditions and around traffic.
A valid driver's license is required.
Qualifications of the successful applicant will determine the engineering classification level assigned.

All position responsibilities are tightly related to the SD DOT mission to efficiently provide a safe and efficient public transportation system. These duties include:
- project management responsibilities and completion of the environmental review on transportation projects for compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA);
- permit applications for Stormwater Permit for Construction Activities;
- stormwater inspections and reporting on active construction projects;
- manage, maintain, and facilitate the Erosion and Sediment Certification Course;
- manage the Stormwater Management Plan;
- work independently and collaboratively as a team.
Knowledge of:
- regulatory and non-regulatory permitting compliance with emphasis on the Clean Water Act;
- engineering and scientific principles, practices, and methods as applicable to storm water as well as erosion and sediment controls;
- compiling and presenting strategies across multiple engineering and scientific disciplines;
- preparation of environmental documents including Categorical Exclusions, Section 4(f) assessments, and storm water permits that assess the impacts of transportation projects on the environment;
- highway design, construction plans assembly, and construction standards and specifications.
- access, operate, and maintain various software applications (i.e. Microsoft-based software, Microstation, and Arc Pro);
- read and interpret construction plans, right-of-way plats, and regulatory guidance documents;
- provide technical information and interpretation to the general public, permitting agencies, consultants, contractors, and other SDDOT staff;
- prepare concise requirements to regulatory permit documents.
- work independently on several concurrent projects and participate in the entire design process;
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel, management, contractors, consultants, and the general public;
- formulate and solve advanced problems related to water resources issues and best management practice design;
- effectively communicate information both verbally and in writing;
- research, analyze, and present technical performance and project measures into permit applications;
- demonstrate self-confidence and take action when needed.
