This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Agriculture & Natural Resources, working in both field and office environments. DANR’s Water Quality Program is looking for a talented Environmental Engineer to join our team. Engineers in the Water Quality Program assist with the implementation of the state’s Surface Water Discharge program (NPDES). Persons in this position collaborate with a wide variety of industries and public sector entities such as municipal wastewater operations.
Our engineers work with the regulated community to solve technical problems and ensure protection of the water resource. Travel within the state is required for inspections; travel out of state for training and conferences is also required. Our team is responsible for helping grow South Dakota by working with municipalities and industries to promote economic development in an environmentally responsible manner. You will join a team of engineers and scientists who work together to protect and improve South Dakota’s water quality by regulating pollution and protecting human health and the environment.
Licenses And CertificationsMust have a degree in an engineering field (environmental, chemical, civil, mechanical, etc.) from an ABET accredited college. EIT is not required, but highly desired.
The Ideal Candidate Will HaveDesire for continual learning and strong problem-solving, analytical, and interpersonal skills. Bachelor’s or master’s degree in environmental, civil, geological, or related engineering field from an ABET accredited college.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Principles and practices of environmental and civil engineering.
- Causes and control of pollution.
- State or federal regulation such as the Clean Water Act.
- Perform water quality/pollutant load modeling gained through academic or professional experience.
- Use common productivity software such as Microsoft Office and other advanced software such as PowerBI, ArcGIS, etc.
- Communicate and coordinate with other engineers and scientists, other local, state, and federal agencies, and the public.
- Make appropriate decisions by applying established engineering guidelines.
- Conduct detailed inspections of wastewater facilities, manufacturing facilities or other similar facilities.
- Write reports, analyze data, read and interpret rules and conditions.
- Provide effective customer service to a wide range of internal and external customers.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Work effectively with a team of engineers and scientists to protect South Dakota’s water quality.

DANR offers a $2,500 hiring and retention incentive, half paid by your second paycheck and the remainder after 15 months of service (current state employees are not eligible).
