Position Summary

This is a full‑time position with the Department of Transportation. Location will be determined by the agency/hiring manager based on the needs of the agency and the experience level of the candidate. The role is responsible for working with utility companies and other DOT staff to identify potential impacts to existing utilities and determine possible alternatives to avoid or minimize those impacts during highway construction projects.

Duties include notifying utility companies of planned construction projects, conducting meetings to inform them of proposed highway designs, preparing agreements to ensure appropriate reimbursement of utility relocation/adjustment costs, and issuing certifications per state and federal regulations.

Typical office environment with site travel and occasional overnight stays.

The total compensation of hourly wage plus state/federal benefits for a typical entry level Transportation Utilities Coordinator is approximately $85,220.00 annually.

Ideal Candidate Will Have

A 2‑year technical degree in civil engineering technology, engineering/architectural drafting, or a vocational technical degree in a related field; a 4‑year construction management degree; and/or related experience in highway and/or utility construction is preferred.

Knowledge
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies regarding the location and relocation of utilities (preferred but not required)
  • Utilities operations and standards (preferred but not required)
  • Legal land descriptions (preferred but not required)
  • Principles related to design and construction of projects
Skill
  • Use Micro Station/Inroads or similar CAD software (preferred but not required)
  • Read and interpret utility plans and maps (preferred but not required)
  • Read and interpret highway construction plans or related construction plans
  • Communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
Ability
  • Display high standards of ethical conduct
  • Demonstrate self‑confidence and take action when needed
  • Attend to all details of assignments and complete work accurately and thoroughly
  • Treat customers courteously and be responsive to their needs
  • Work cooperatively with others and promote a friendly work climate in order to achieve shared goals
