Responsibilities

Maintains daily contact with offenders, to assist them with their day-to-day living in a correctional facility and to organize their activities while providing motivation and guidance; facilitates scheduling and program options in order that they may receive opportunities to learn how to change their criminal behavior.

Knowledge
  • Department of Correction’s Inmate Living Guide, classification system and post operational rules (POR).
  • Department of Correction’s policies and the institution’s operations and procedures.
  • Modern concepts, principles, and practices related to the re-entry of an offender back into society.
  • Attitude, problems, and behavior of incarcerated individuals.
  • Programs available for rehabilitation of offenders.
  • Knowledge of offender visiting policy.
  • Microsoft Office products, specifically Word and Excel.
  • The Use of Force Continuum.
  • The Disciplinary (DHO) policy and its implementation.
  • De-escalation techniques.
  • Multi-generational workforce.
Abilities
  • Communicate and document logically, accurately, and concisely all pertinent information and decisions.
  • Make proper responses to safety and security problems.
  • Relate to and establish rapport with offenders and assist them in their initial adaptation to prison life.
  • Plan, organize, schedule, and direct the work of others.
  • Apply department policies and institution operations and procedures for the assigned housing unit.
  • Maintain composure under stressful conditions or tense situations and de-escalate situations.
  • Participate in the criminal justice system regarding the treatment of inmates and/or incarcerated individuals (state statute, ADA, PREA, and department policies and guidelines).
  • Enforce and uphold department policy, procedure and practice.
  • Study information and recount events in a written, comprehensive and legible method.
  • Incorporate the SDDOC Mission Statement while completing daily duties.
  • Willingness to respectfully work with a diverse population.
  • Conduct searches (general area, metal detector, pat-down, perimeter, unclothed or vehicle).
  • Operate communications equipment professionally (e.g., two-way radio, telephone, PA).
  • Willingness to follow chain of command.
  • Work as a team with a diverse group of people.
Job Functions
  • Provide work direction to Correctional Officers on the unit and perform security operations to ensure staff and offender safety and unit security.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to security staff assigned to their supervision chain.
  • Make work assignments based on facility operations and institutional needs.
  • Coordinate with the OIC to ensure appropriate floor coverage.
  • Communicate professionally with both staff and offender population.
  • Conduct formal and informal counts and emergency counts.
  • Conduct searches per policy.
  • Maintain controlled movement of offender population.
  • Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
  • Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations.
  • Follow established tool and key control procedures.
  • Assist the Officer In Charge (OIC) in daily management tasks.
  • Performs other work as assigned.
Ideal Candidate

Two (2) years of experience working directly with a hard-to-serve high-needs client population in a correctional or human services environment.

  • Hard-to-serve needs clients include individuals with multiple barriers to employment, lack of educational or occupational skills attainment, low-income workers, low literacy or English proficiency, disability status, homelessness, ex-offenders and justice-involved individuals, and public assistance dependency.
